Ego's ZTR IS the Electric Lawnmower to Beat Out Gas WE LOVE THE POWER AND VERSATILITY of gas-engine mowers.
But after decades of testing them and many more decades of using them, we're also keenly aware of their shortcomings: noise, smell, numerous hot surfaces, oil changes, tune-ups, and mechanical complexity. Electric mowers look more inviting with every passing year. But can they really go head-to-head with gas machines? And, more importantly, could they even be the better mowers?
We now have a lawnmower that answers "yes" to both those questions. This spring, outdoor power equipment manufacturer Ego rolled out its ZT5207, a $7,000, 52-inch battery-powered mower that does more than cut grass. It takes aim squarely at the frustrations that people have with gas-engine models and particularly with range anxiety-the concern of whether a battery mower can finish a large lawn without running out of juice. The company rates the ZT5207 as being able to mow four acres on one charge. To do so, it equipped the machine with six removable 56-volt lithium-ion batteries, each a massive 12-Ah power pack. Its rated run time is two hours at slow speeds or about 100 minutes at its top 8 mph.
Ego makes some good products. But not for $7k.
They know eco kooks will pay an extra 2 grand to be cool and brag to their lib friends how they are saving the planet.
“noise, smell, numerous hot surfaces, oil changes, tune-ups, and mechanical complexity.
Noise I will give you.”
I always wear swimmers silicone ear plugs when using my lawnmower

Ahh yes, nothing like waking up to on sleepy quiet Sunday morning and have some neighbor start up some obnoxious gas powered weedwacker. The only thing worse would be for the local motorcycle gang to decide to do drivebys of your house for an hour.
Unfortunately some demented Democrat from Delaware sent lithium prices soaring.
I would like a battery powered, self-propelled lawnmower, but battery pricing has become too high.
I like my Greenworks weedwhacker.
Batteries will last 2 or 3 years, and you best replace them in sets.
I have an electric weed wacker, and I like it, except for the battery life thing. Need a set right now.
I was going to get a battery powered chainsaw, but am very hesitant due to the proprietary batteries.
With 6 acres to mow, am using a gas powered mower, bought it used in 1991, and it is still working fine. You will never find an electric anything with a life like that.
We mow 3 acres. Forget the electric. I like my 24 hp Cub Cadet. 48 inch cut and mows fast.
My cordless mowing experience...
I have a Kobalt 40V cordless mower, mainly because I already had a Kobalt cordless pole chainsaw (which I love) and Kobalt cordless weedeater, so I had two 2 Ah batteries already.
Between the two 2 Ah batteries and the 5 Ah battery that comes with the mower, I can mow the entire yard. Otherwise, I’d have to mow half the yard, stop, let the battery cool down for hours, recharge the battery for hours, and then mow the other half, so mowing my half acre lot would be a two day affair.
Oh, and if the grass is thick, I have to raise the mower up to the tallest setting, otherwise it bogs down very easily, and the battery will be exhausted very quickly, like within five minutes, sometimes even less.
If you have a tiny yard, it’s great. The thing is lighter and much easier to push than a gas mower. Just be aware of the limitations.
$7,000 buckeroos? LMAO! That’s about 25 times more than the Kobalt. If I had that much money laying around I could afford a contract with a lawn service. Kobalt has an 80V mower for around $500, which I’m sure would solve the problems I have with the 40V mower...if I could afford it...
Yeah, a 110 corded . Lasted forever…but don’t run over that cord…
Those things go for $1,200 up to $5,000.
Will purchase the 7k machine after I buy my 50 k EV. /s
Stihl also owns a piece of GreenWorksPro which is Chinese.
Thanks for the detailed info, especially about the tall grass issue.
Sounds like a no go for now....
Not at that price. I have a Toro 60" zero-turn that I bought new for $2400. (Yeah, it's that old.) I mow over 2 acres with it every 10 days during the growing season. I only change oil & filters, blades, and changed the belt once. Yeah, I put gas in it, too. It replaced an older Toro that I gave to my son, and it still runs!
If you think those high-dollar batteries in that electric mower last that long, think again.
I have an 8 year old Honda with a 190cc engine. The newer Hondas have an even larger engine. This is the new version of what I have: https://powerequipment.honda.com/lawn-mowers/models/hrx217vka
I think Troy-Bilt uses or used Honda engines on some of their models.
Mine still starts on the first pull and runs like a champ! Of course, I keep it well maintained.
Forrest Gump had it right, he “retired” and rode a mower for fun.
