Even if you fix all these issues, the fundamental problem with electric cars is that it takes about two MEGAWatts to charge a battery pack at the same rate of useful energy as for filling a tank with gasoline. (There are 120,000,000 Joules of energy in a tank of gasoline. You get to use between a third and a sixth of this depending on driving conditions. The rest ends up as heat. Even at 1/6, thats 20,000,000 Joules that a charger would need to deliver. Since it takes about ten seconds to add a gallon of gasoline...)
Solar or nuclear energy to methanol is the way to go.
My personal favorite concept is zinc-air fuel cells, and refueling would involve dumping your zinc oxide/hydroxide while winding a zinc chain onto a spool.
