Alaska U.S. Rep. Don Young has died, former aides said on Friday. Details were not immediately available.

Young, a Republican, had served in Congress since 1973, when he was sworn in after winning a special election.

Young was the longest-serving member of the U.S. House, was in his 25th term and running for a 26th.

He was his state’s sole member of the House for more than three-fourths of the time Alaska has been a state.

I oppose term-limits. If someone is doing an effective job, why limit them? There's a reason why Young served 50 years in Congress. His constituents liked him, obviously. All term limits is going to do is make them an effective lame-duck and they can't get anything done. If you don't like someone vote them out.

How cute.

You think we actually have honest elections in this country and a say in who our overlords are to be.

Speaking as an 88-year-old Freeper, he was far too young to go...
R.I.P.

Maybe he should have retired when I did...

Time for Sarah Palin to run for Congress.

I hope his soul will Rest In Peace. But can we stop electing Royalty?

Term limits would go a long way to solving many of the nations' problems.

Off topic, but is your “handle” derived from a desire to see faster than light propulsion?

*Time for Sarah Palin to run for Congress.*

Double whammy. Run and win. THEN run for speakership. Back door her way back into power. Her bigger target would have been Murkowski but she’s a wobbler. By starting out in the lower house she would be in the rats heads rent-free as they say. Heh heh.

In follow-up to my previous post, except for his loss to Nick Begich in 1972, Don Young never got less than 50% of the vote. In fact from 1992 he faced up to 4 challengers and had some of his highest percentage wins. In 2002 he took 74.5% of the vote.

This said, open seats bring out all comers.

As a former Alaska resident, I just say good riddance. Hopefully the state can get some non-family successor. Really tired of several families creating dynasties.

No way in heaven or earth would I have voted for him. I haven’t for all the election in tue past 20 years. All he cared about was raping taxpayers for welfare in Alaska. Screw that.
Look into Nick Begich, if you haven’t already.

Check 1992, Young only got 46.8% against John Devens (who similarly held him to a 52-48% win in 1990). Since 2014, he has underperformed as an incumbent, getting from only 50.3% in 2016 to a high of 54.4% in 2020. All should’ve been warning signs to retire and pass it off to a younger Republican and preferably Conservative successor.

Fieldmarshaldj is correct. I checked his electoral history and Don Young won with 46% of the vote in 1992, and only 50% in 2008, 2014, and 2016. Claiming he was Mr. Popularity in Alaska was simply not true. He lucked into getting elected for decades, mainly due to having “R” next to his name in a heavily GOP state.

My main concern is the Alaska GOP will pull what they do for the Dingell family in Michigan, and try to anoint a family member to that seat so they can continue the “tradition” of having a “Congressman Young” for eternity.

Rather odd that Young started to consistently underperform in 2014. Guess he was past his prime and voters noticed.

His closest race was actually the 2008 primary when then-Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell ran and lost by just 304 votes (a 3rd candidate took a critical 9%, as both got only 45% of the vote). Had Parnell won, another individual would’ve been chosen by then-Gov. Palin and would’ve succeeded her on her resignation. Parnell would’ve likely been Senator today had he gone that route (whether instead of Sullivan or challenging Lisa is the question).
