“German soldiers willing to be taken prisoner and shipped out to the comfort and protection of one of 511 POW camps in America”

I recall watching an interview with a German soldier who got sent to a POW camp in Texas and he knew the Allies and the Americans were going to win the war when he as a POW ate better than he did before he was captured or surrendered.

In the mid-90s I was traveling on a train from Frankfurt to Marseilles via Mainz. Early that morning, just before wa arrived in Mainz, I ended up sharing a small table with a tall, white-haired German Gentleman and his wife.

He said "are you British?" and I told him, "no, I'm an American". Then He said "I don't like Americans - you took me prisoner in North Africa during the war. You made me harvest corn in Tennessee."

I smiled and told him "that sure beat the crap out of serving on the Russian Front, didn't it?"

He broke into a smile and bought my breakfast.
