For the first time since Alec Baldwin accidentally shot one crew member and injured another while filming for Rust, the armourer for the film has spoken out.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins passed away on Thursday, October 21, as a result of the incident. The film’s director, Joel Souza was also injured.
Baldwin had not known the gun had live ammunition in it, however the 63-year-old has been subject to extreme online abuse in the wake of the incident.
The set’s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has now spoken out about the tragedy.
Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence, Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyers said safety was her ‘number one priority on set’ and that she wanted to take the opportunity to ‘address some untruths’, Metro reports.
They said:
Ultimately this set would never have been compromised if live ammo were not introduced. Hannah had no idea where the live rounds came from.
Hannah and the prop master gained control over the guns and she never witnesses anyone shoot live rounds with these guns and nor would she permit that. They were locked up every night and at lunch and there’s no way a single one of them was unaccounted for or being shot by crew members.

She should have refused the job if she couldn’t do it safely.
Others walked off, but I think that was due to accomodations, but there may have also been safety complains related to that.
She is suggesting the guns were not used for plinking, and her assurance there makes sense to me. I think it’s likely they weren’t, and they haven’t found anyone who witnessed that, or knew of it directly.
Previously she stared when she examined the fired gun, she removed 4 dummy rounds, with holes drilled in them, and the spent casing.
But, she says she had complete control over the guns at all times, including lunch. If that is true, that would eliminate the possibility someone put a live round in the gun while it was unattended. She is removing part of her chain of custody defense.
If only her and the AD had access to the gun, and handled it before giving it to Baudwin, then how was the live round put into the gun?
Looking this over quickly - to the extent she is credible, the only thing she’s claimed absolution for her is leaving the gun unattended.

The media kept using the term “prop gun” but it was actually a real gun. Prop guns don’t shoot live rounds. Unmodified blank guns won’t chamber and fire live rounds.
Some sets will use actual guns as props to be more realistic, i.e. produce muzzle flash. If the gun is semi-auto it is modified to cycle when using blank rounds. However, I’m not sure if or how revolvers are modified.
Proof yet AGAIN, that ALL problems are HR problems.

I BELIEVE that special effects cost a lot more than a gun that shoots blanks.
I know nothing about making movies. However, i would guess having any post production special effects added in to the film cost many times more than the cost of a “blank” round.

No AD yells “COLD GUN” The armourer or prop person is supposed to PERSONALLY show you the gun so you can see it is empty for yourself. Then I dry fire it into the ground. I have NEVER been handed a gun by an AD & I’ve been handed 100 guns & I’ve never heard “COLD gun” in 40 years.

I used a a handgun every day on the set of my show for 9 years. No one ever used those terms. The actors always checked their weapons themselves no matter what anyone on set told them.

It has ben reported (and therefore might be false) that Gutierrez took the cartridges out of the firearm right after Baldwin fired, and gave them to the police.
Could be she was trying to neutralize the weapon after the murder, but her actions if true are highly suspicious and make it impossible to know if she switched the rounds.
Checking prints on all the ammo present at the site is needed.
The prop master is OVER Hannah.
Ah, but consider: Hollywood. They're...different.
Baldwin pulled the trigger and never checked the gun. There is no excuse he can submit to change that. "I thought" means nothing.

My liberal wife and I had this discussion. She looked at every circumstance, emotion, excuse possible for this. I just said, there are rules everyone handling a firearm must follow and neither Baldwin nor the person handing the weapon to Baldwin followed.
She argued it wasn’t as simple as I said. And I said, as a firearm owner, yes, it is that simple.
I keep seeing that Baldwin should have checked the gun when he was handed it.
