Seeing how advanced classical Roman civilization and art were, and then comparing it with everything that came afterwards for the next thousand years, is both awesome and terrifying.

Seeing other paintings from Pompeii, the realism that was evident in their creation was lost for a thousand years during the Dark Ages.
