LEXINGTON, S.C. — Lexington police now believe a man killed a 72-year-old woman during an argument over what to do about feral cats.
Chief Terrence Green said Friday Sean Eric Malahy, 49, is charged with murder in the death of Judy Burnett.
The incident happened Thursday afternoon on West Main Street near a shopping center in downtown Lexington.
Officers say prior to the shooting incident, Burnett had gotten into an argument about feeding feral cats with a witness who was with Malahy. Officers say Malahy got into an argument with Burnett which turned into a physical fight. During this fight, police say Malahy shot Burnett.
Officers say they found Malahy at the scene and in possession of a handgun. He was taken into custody and he was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center.
Police say they determined Burnett and Malahy had known each other for a number of years and that they had ongoing disagreements about their own involvement in the feeding, trapping, and releasing of feral cats that are known to live behind businesses in the woods behind the business.
Malahy was set to have a bond hearing Friday afternoon.
I live about 15 minutes from where this happened. When the story broke last night I suspected something strange was afoot, but over feral cats?!?
Feral cats are now a reason to murder someone? This lockdown really needs to end, and people need to relax.
Does this qualify as a good old fashioned cat fight?
“... behind businesses in the woods behind the business...”
Do third graders write this stuff????????
What a poofer.
With murder charge hanging over his head, I think Sean’s issues with feral cats is just beginning and will continue for the next 25 years.
I almost never go to Lexington.
There is a lady in my Forest Acres area that keeps an eye on a couple of feral cat colonies around city hall and a close by property.
She is a nice but kind of feisty senior citizen. I run into her sometimes when she is by my warehouse building looking after cats.
The lady is also an extra set of eyes in the area.
Good point.
Yes.
In Prosperity, SC we had good experience with this lady, who doesn’t charge (but happily receives donations) for handling feral cats.

They should have called my wife’s Uncle Buster. He singlehandedly ended a feral cat infestation in Price, Utah with his .22LR Winchester. And ended up with an award winning garden, too.
Were they Koreans?
businesses in the woods behind the business.
Particularly if they are being operated by feral cats.
I lived in a condo complex where some residents used to feed the feral cats near the dumpster - while others had arranged for a feral cat pickup. The county and private groups take the cats and neuter them, try to adopt out the kittens and then re-release the now non-breeding ferals.
When the meeting of the HOA was held, the police had to be called to keep order and there were actually a couple of arrests. People get weird about this.
There are a couple people in my neighborhood who feed the feral cats so what do you know, the neighborhood is overrun with the creatures.
Insanity is real....and they can vote...multiple times....
Aye, yup.
I’d call Animal Control rather than murder someone over them.
