Yesterday my 17-yr-old daughter was dancing around to this very song. I said, “how do you even know this?” She gave me a look. And then I said, “oh right - internet.”

Here’s another question I’ve always wondered.

Why in the Brothers Johnson song, it goes:

A present from you
Strawberry letter 22

But the title of the song is “Strawberry Letter 23”?

Okay, that accounts for Strawberry Letter 22 - but what about Strawberry Letters 1-21?

And while we’re at it, whatever happened to Funks 1 through 48?

Strawberry letter 22, is the letter his girl sends him, and his reply, the song, is strawberry letter 23. So that's the title of the song.

The song was written by Shuggie Otis in 1971. Lee Ritenour did the solo on the Brothers Johnson versio.

I always assumed the song itself was Strawberry Letter 23 - a response to Strawberry Letter 22, which the singer had received.

The other day on SiriusXM, they played Funk 48. Apparently, that was on the previous album, but they just made that number up.

My wife and I saw/heard EW&F long before they became a national hit. They were playing in the DC Summer in the Park program at the corner of 15th and Pennsylvania Avenue.

We heard music and went to see who it was. They were great. “September” is their best hit in my opinion.

I agree it's their best.

It's cool you got to see them. They also did the soundtrack to Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, before they were famous.
