FOP storms away from contract talks after Lightfoot demands 17 pages of disciplinary reforms
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 9/16/2020 | Fran Spielman and Sam Charles

Chicago Police officers have waited more than three years for a new contract and the retroactive pay raise that comes with it.

The first substantive offer they got from Mayor Lori Lightfoot was hardly worth the wait, according to their fiery union president.

Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara said he stormed away from Tuesday’s long-awaited negotiating session after the mayor’s team offered his members the same 10% pay raise over four years already awarded to Chicago firefighters in exchange for higher health care contributions — but tacked on 17 pages, including 40 disciplinary reforms.

Catanzara was so insulted by the offer and the conditions Lightfoot attached to it he plans to make a financial-only counter-offer and demand an up-or-down vote by the City Council. He refused to reveal specifics, except to say the union’s proposal would be higher than the city’s 10%, but lower than the 18% over three years demanded by his predecessor.

Those aldermen who dare to oppose the FOP’s offer will find themselves facing opponents recruited and bankrolled by the police union.

“We will be taking names. We will be slating candidates. … We will have a $1 million-a-year PAC going forward starting next year. And in 2023, there’s going to be a day of reckoning for these aldermen who think they can skate by under the radar and say they support the police, but do nothing,” Catanzara said.

“We’re gonna see who shows up and who wants to do the right thing by the men and women of this police department who have absolutely been champions this whole summer and used like rented mules at the drop of a hat with no consideration whatsoever. Well, it’s time to pay the piper.”

I just hope that Mayor Lightfoot finds herself in need of police assistance soon so that the police chief can say, “stand Down”

The police have been on her block - I’m talking a dozen or so squad cars, all around her home, day and night, 24/7, since the end of May.

Forgot to add - and she still treats them like rented mules.

I would really have to agree with Catanzara, but think that probably Chicago is ill-equipped to do much in the way of a proper settlement. This mayor seems to have let the situation get too far out of hand in the first place with respect to the rioters & now is caught between a rock & a hard place. It might be near impossible to pay for the agreement previously made for the firefighters. Chicago needs different & better management & it’s pretty late to get started at this point without some major problems.

The city would start burning in less than 24 hours.

She ought to ask Rahm Emanuel to work on a contractual basis for the next two years. He might help establish some sense of order. But, of course, Ms Lightfoot would have too much pride and too little sense to do entertain such a humble notion.

Rahm might refuse to step into this mess anyway.

Mayor Lori Elaine Lightfoot

Sounds like she has her work cut out to get an agreement.

The crime would be in the areas where the wealthy live who donate lots of cash tho the people running for office and would demand it stop.

Look at Seattle and CHAZ/CHOP. It wasn’t a issue, murders included, until they got to the Mayors house.

I like the way liberal synapses fry at the cognitive dissonance: “Must Hate Police” vs. “Must Support Unions”.

“It is clear that you are totally misreading this moment, the demands of the consent decree and the needs of the public. It is unfortunate that you do not appear serious about reaching an agreement. Every day that passes that your members are without a contract is now on you.”

Uh, no. They live thru the "moment" where they had lasers/flashlights pointed at them, fireworks, bricks, bottles of "water" and more thrown at them for weeks.

If BLM can't peacefully protest and discuss issues without violence, they don't get to have a seat at the contract table. I doubt a single CPD officer would support the new TBD policies they want them to work under.
