This is true.
I actually owned a Dave Matthews Band CD for a while, just because my wife (then my girlfriend) liked them.
My dad, rest his soul, clued me into that. I was well on my way, at 15, to being an insufferable Prog rock snob (is that a redundancy?) with a diet of Yes, ELP, etc. Pops pointed out that few things would insult a girl more than ridiculing her taste in music (or clothes). Being able to not just tolerate but find enjoyment in the stuff the women my age loved was probably the best advice I ever got (besides protecting oneself appropriately).
