How Do Political "Matching Funds" Work?
Trump Campaign Email | Vanity

Posted on 08/21/2020 8:01:00 PM PDT by Williams

I don't fault the Trump campaign for making every type of pitch imaginable to get me to contribute.

I'm still a little irked at Melania, because she once failed to send me a calendar she promised, and I really believed she wanted me to have that calendar.

But can anyone educate me on the concept of "matching funds" and how it really works?

Ok, I figure that some rich donor or organization pledges to match every dollar raised during a certain period.

But tonight I received an email stating there will be a "700% match"! How does this work? If someone is really going to contribute 7 times all the other money raised, isn't it more important that they just contribute that huge amount? The 1/8 contributed by others seems to pale in the scheme of things.

Seems very gimmicky to me. Do we know who actually provides the matching funds, and do they really only contribute based on how much others contribute?

Is this a solicitation from the Trump campaign, or from “a joint fundraising effort for Donald J. Trump for President and the Republican National Committee?”

Read the fine print and get back to us.

Just a side note: you know the calendar was sent out through the USPS, right? And that USPS workers have been caught, in the past, dumping mail in the trash, especially thing like Republican mailers, right?

I never believed those things either. and 7 to one? I wonder if President Trump knows about this...

Or... Do you know for sure this REALLY came from the Trump campaign, and not some scam?

Hmm...at the presidential level it doesn’t make much sense, does it?

At the Congressional level, perhaps. There are some fine candidates out there - but do they have a chance of winning? If they raise $X, big donors might come in and contribute more.

The response by D Rider is a very valid one regarding your calendar. The Postal Union and their workers are no fans of republicans and especially Conservatives and most especially President Trump or anyone associated with him.
This is the primary reason President Trump has been sounding the alarm regarding mail-in ballots.
The fact that postal workers are known to discard mail is not a myth. It is a stone-cold fact. Documented on more occasions than you can count.

The 5, 6, or 7 to 1 matching campaign is a product of the Vote Red committee. A joint venture of the RNC and the Trump reelection committee.
There are mega-donors that have committed to match at that level during a specific time period all small contributions received during a specific time period.

To be clear I like to joke about the calendar not arriving, but yeah a postal worker could have trashed it.

Ok here is the source of the email:
“Paid for by Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising committee authorized by and composed of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. and the Republican National Committee.”

It’s written from President Trump and says the 7 times matching was on for only one hour. If true, I kind of wish I’d contributed then.

I don’t think the email ever says who matches the funds.

I’m not faulting the campaign, I get letters, emails and texts addressed from every member of the Trump family and every republican notable you can think of.

Just was wondering about the matching and especially when it went up to 7 times.

I’ve never donated to any Presidential campaign but I did give $50 to the Vote Red/Trump. They then sent me an email that they were going to DOUBLE my donation and charged my credit card a second time for the $50 with no input from me. Now I’m in for $100. Ever since then, I have been bombarded nonstop with emails, texts and mail. I understand that money is a very important part of a successful run for office, but I’m getting a feeling I’m in a shake down. Any way to get them to NOT continue to beg for money and that when and if I want to I will do so without their spurring?

At the bottom of those emails there are two blocks one is for “make this a monthly donation”. And, the other is, “double your donation” The second block is pre-checked. You have un-check it.
The second block schedules a second equivalent donation two weeks later. It’s BS that the fundraisers do this but, you have to be sure to scan the entire page before you submit a donation to look for these sort of things.
I always read the entirety of such fundraisers looking for stuff like that so, I haven’t been burned by that.

On a related note: How do I trust a link in a solicitation email? Does anyone have verified URLs and IP addresses for the Trump campaign, and any other good candidates? Thanks in advance.

I sent $35 and I’m supposed to get a pretty cool looking RWB/SS USA cap.

Matching funds at 700%, C'mon man.

If they have seven times the amount that they want you to pledge, what in the hell do they need with your single amount?

8 + emails per day begging money, WINRED, once RETIRED is checked this should have slowed to once a month, living on SS doesn’t give you much spare money.. Even after unsubscribing I’m still getting begging multiple request, NOT small amounts, $200-300. I know to the penny how much I can spare.

After having to BUY THE RIGHT WHEELCHAIR, I don’t have extra money. Medicare has only INSTITUTION, ISOLATION, NO OUT SIDE CHAIRS. SCAM.

I got on the mailing lists for almost every Republican candidate in the country because I really wanted to help and made several donations.

Now I am called one of the President’s number one supporters(as with other supplicants like John Cornyn) and even got an email from Melania saying she and the President are looking forward to having dinner with me in the WH. Too bad the President would be present because I know I could convince her to dump him for this 80 y.o. super guy. :-)

Anyway, I have just made a decision this month when the volume of email keeps growing to click the unsubscribe link on each individual mailing to get off the lists.

I might even send some more money, but with some way to do it without the constant hectoring from all the big names from the Party like Trump, Newt, Scalise, Don Jr. Eric, Mitch via automail about more money. What we need is specific information about seats to win instead of urgent cries of doom and gloom if they don’t get money by midnight.

By encouraging the small contributor, the numbers go up and the average contribution goes down. No candidate wants to look like they are getting mega bucks from a few donors. I think the dems are going to have a much harder time.

I would go online with the credit card and protest BOTH donations, zeroing them out.

The first one because of the hidden second ‘donation’ bit, and the second because you didn’t authorize it.

Then go to the Trump Campaign website and give the money directly to him.

Screw these shysters.
