It’s really just about 8 counties that give the rest of the state a bad name.
We came down from Tacoma and stayed at Cannon Beach a few years ago, on to Portland, took the Columbia River scenic route East to the far side of Oregon, circled back up to Seattle. NEVER saw a hint of what was coming. Beaches were beautiful, Portland interesting and friendly, outstanding scenery. Nothing would’ve led us to believe the area would degenerate that fast.
Personal theory: Oregon is and has been a destination for California bums for whom CA is too expensive and “conservative.”
Awful people like nice places to live, too.
Last year, we drove from Portlandia to Bend to Brookings and the Redwoods and back up the coast to Portlandia. Beautiful state and friendly people. The only kooks we saw were in downtown Portland. Weird not pump your own gas.
It’s the exact same reason that effs up the state of Washington. A bunch of liberals, concentrated in one area plus the capitol (Portland & Salem in OR, Seattle & Olympia in WA). The concentration of liberals skews the political landscape so that, despite the rest of each state being more-or-less Normal, those areas seems to have most of the say in how the state looks to everyone else.
Trustafarian wannabe anarchists and revolutionaries aggregate there.

Well, I dunno. But I do remember back in about 1975 all the cars running around the state with the bumper stickers that said “Don’t Californicate Oregon”

Oregon has been that way for decades...One of the reasons we didn’t relocate there.
It took many years of democrat control. Even now, only the democrat controlled portions of the state are truly effed up.

They have had vote-by-mail for many years now.
My argument is that it is the farthest point from the seat of power (DC) that any sense of “Americanism” is lost. I use the same argument to describe the former Soviet Union. The country was massive, covering 10 or 11 time zones. When you get away from what made the country what it is/was you loose the identity that most have. Just look at the map of Russia. You can’t hold that kind of diversity together for long because of regional identity. The people may still be smiling and friendly, but for many their identity as an American is gone.
With the U.S., the nuts seem to flow west, congregate, propagate, and continue on as though they were in their own country, forgetting where they came from and what they are a part of. The U.S. seems to be just old enough for 3rd or 4th generation people in California, Oregon, Hawaii, or Washington to reject what the vast majority of the country still stands for.
As far as I’m concerned, and as much as it pains me to say this, they’re on their own, and they have no one else to blame when everything comes crashing down around them.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a considerable number of people in the Pacific coast states have grandparents and great-grandparents who were the hippies of the 1950s and 60s. (I think that San Fran has been referred to as the hippie capitol of the world.)
In other words, their “angry at government corruption” hippie grandparents, also constitutionally clueless, ultimately traded their “threads” and sandals for business attire and got themselves elected to public office to “save the world,” but are now screwing things up worse than the original crook politicians did imo.

They have an attitude that Oregon has to be first in everything. They were first to focus on the environment to try to destroy their economy and focus mainly on tourism as their primary industry. Their drivers are some of the worst as they didn’t teach drivers ed. in HS.
Even though they were republican led for years they were mostly RINOs.

Portland has the San Francisco of Oregon, since before the turn of the millennium. In the ‘90’s, Portland was seething with women executives proving their elitism and feminazism to every subordinate worker of either sex.
Portland State University, in downtown Portland, was seething with the sjw’s and communista.
