Amid reopening debate, CDC reports school-age kids make up tiny fraction of COVID deaths

Districts are announcing indefinite closings over pandemic but data shows children 5- to 14-years-old constitute just 0.012% of COVID-19 deaths.

The CDC's latest provisional COVID-19 death count, updated on Wednesday, reports that as of July 11 just 16 American children in the key 5-14-years-old school-age bracket had died from COVID-19. Those fatalities constitute just 0.012% of the 130,250 deaths total at the time the dataset was compiled earlier this month.

The strikingly low number comes even as education officials and teachers are demanding open-ended shutdowns of local school systems, claiming that reopening school buildings for instruction in the fall would be placing undue risks on students and staff. Huge school districts such as those of Los Angeles and Fairfax County, Va., have pledged to continue virtual learning when the fall semester begins; countless other smaller districts have also vowed to keep school buildings closed in August.

Bolstering the CDC's report this week, data throughout much of the world indicate that few school-age children get seriously ill from COVID-19 while even fewer die from the disease.

Many authorities both in the U.S. and elsewhere have urged schools to reopen. CDC director Robert Redfield said earlier this month that "having the schools actually closed is a greater public health threat to the children than having the schools reopen." A major Canadian pediatric hospital, meanwhile, said last month that schools should reopen with minimal restrictions and regulations.

It is exceptionally important that some diversionary article comes out at least 3 times a day discussing what nobody is all that concerned about. Preferably from the CDC, whom nobody believes.

The issue with schools (to them) is the transmission to teachers.

It’s pretty well known at this point that kids don’t get the virus, of suffer only minimal effects in the great majority of cases. of course, that does not mean that SOME OF THEM will not get grievously sick and possibly die.

But that’s not what teachers give a crap about.

‘16 deaths 5-14-years-old = 0.012% of the 130,250 deaths total’
HOWEVER THE REAL NUMBER IS 16 DEATHS OUT OF 74,000,000 KIDS!

This puts COVID far far down on the US kids cause of deaths list. It is far likely that more kids have died from staying at home.

Shhh! Don’t say that! Teacher unions want schools to be closed until Joe Biden wins the election on November 3rd.

AMERICA IS TO REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL IT REMOVES ALL ITS BORDERS.
(And defunds its Police!)
(And rejoins the Paris Climate Accord!)
(And pays for and rejoins the WHO!)
(And votes in the demented pedophile to replace the President!)
(And we agree to celebrate a different gender every day of the year!)
(And we let them burn all the non Islamic Churches!)
(And we pay reparations to all non white or non straight people on the planet!)

(By order of the DEMoncrat Party.)

IF parents will school their kids, let the schools stay closed.

Why are we so eager to put them back into indoctrination classes? Sounds like some of it is the Dumbles don’t want it so we should be for it.

It could be a huge win: cut federal dollars because the kids are not in schools therefore no money needed for buses or buildings. Custodial and dietary staff salaries saved, diversity officers, grief counselors all unnecessary expenses.

And the bonus is the kids are being given a real education, not this 1619 garbage, etc.

Just magical thinking i suppose...no one will dare even mention cutting budgets.

What do you mean—nobody is all that concerned about school reopening?

It’s the #1 concern right now of those voters who are parents and have jobs!

We are in the middle of a breathtaking shift in education. Right now the rich are forming pods of paid tutors and the poor are being placed in pods on school grounds—with no teachers. This is nationwide. . .millions of kids. More millions will be left alone in their bedrooms with a state funded laptop. They are already all 30% behind in reading and 50% behind in math from the spring shutdown.

This is not diversionary—this is the most important topic of the day, if not the year (for parents).

Med cram 98 and Med cram 99 explain a lot.

The paper/spit test costs $l.00 and it will tell you if you are infective (contagious).

You are incorrect—the teachers’ contracts are all signed; there will be no cuts.

Our district—now 100% remote thanks to our tyrannical governor—is cheerfully continuing with massive construction projects, lights for football fields that will not be used, and just bought 5 brand new F-150 trucks for maintaining closed campuses.

When you say “the kids will be given a real education”—who do you think will be providing that? Millions of families can’t afford private schools (also closed anyway) or tutors.

And they can’t homeschool if both working full time jobs.

Yes public school has a lot of leftist indoctrination, but there is no magical replacement for it (for most American children) at this time.

Schools need to reopen. Europe and Asia reopened their schools months ago.

The KEY POINT: “If there more kids killed by the flu, and schools do not shut down for the flu, why now?”

RE: data throughout much of the world indicate that few school-age children get seriously ill from COVID-19 while even fewer die from the disease

Let me play Devil’s advocate somewhat... could this not be also taken to mean these school-aged children don’t get ill or die from CoVid-19 precisely because they are NOT in school socializing with each other?

I understand about teacher contracts, but there are other monies that are not needed. That was my point.
Many folks are still not back at work,,,if they were we would not have the unemployment we do. Many did work on their children’s education.

No one said there is a magic replacement, tho an argument could be made that no replacement beats what they get in many schools, not all but many.

OTH, grocery and other workers show up every day and teachers cant seem to.

15 deaths as of July 11?

Well, that you presume they died of Covid is problematic but, that you had to continue counting 3 months after the flu season to get there proves you are looking for the bad in the good....

Yes, I think teachers should be classified as “essential workers”—they provide education and daycare. And they should report for duty.

What I was referring to is the notion that kids do not get the virus; and if they do, they overwhelmingly suffer no effects past an ordinary cold...I was not downplaying the virus nor school reopenings.

The diversion is to come out with an article whose content is already well known and agreed upon but has almost no bearing upon the reopenings. If it’s well known and agreed upon, then why is there a need to publish an article?

The purpose is to whip sentiment back and forth: report the alarming cases and deaths, then say the kids are not especially at risk. It’s an effort to burnish the credibility of the CDC.

And so the public thinks “well then it must be OK to reopen the schools” but 1-2 days later the cases and deaths numbers will be emphasized and then it will be “well then we better not reopen the schools”. Then, these articles will re-appear and it will once again be OK to reopen the schools, until 2-3 days later when the opposite impression headlines come out and the teachers get extra coverage, so their message, that “we can never reopen the schools until we have a vaccine” get coverage. The whole idea is to get peoples opinions whipped back and forth so that no decision can be made and then the “authorities” have to be put in charge.

Yep - was waiting for someone to make that connection - even more than what you make it though it’s 0.012% of 0.26% (5 July CDC death rate estimate, and it’s of the total population..so kids deaths are at 0.00012% of the total population as far as death rate goes which makes it likely these kids’ deaths fell into a comorbidity category.
