Yes, it was interesting. I had over 25 years with one major company, took early retirement, as per our CPA did nothing for a year (besides hunting/fishing/work on home). Then, I did consulting and focus groups until May 2001.

The travel even up and down the coast became a hassle. A bomb scare at LAX and a couple of unplanned hassles made travel very miserable. My retirement pay was calculated with them paying the equivalent of SS until I turned 62. Then, I went on SS and that was subtracted from my corporate retirement check.

My CPA told my wife to fill up a homer’s bucket with 5 and 10 dollar bills, and for my wife to sit in my truck bed every Friday and throw out the money. We had set up an impound account at our bank and 60% of each fee I earned went into the account to pay quarterly taxes, health insurance and both sides of the SS/medicare. My family doc told me that the travel was shortening my life.

So I finally/totally retired. My social security printout showed that I had paid in since I was a teenager.

Then, I went to ACE and Home Depot and bought basically every tool, I needed to keep up the home as long as I didn’t have to be on a ladder. My wife and adult sons nicknamed me Rube in short for Rube Goldberg. I still got job offers and turned them down.

I was a healthy/dumb teenager, and working on the railroads as a brakeman and a conductor was interesting work.

It could have been a disaster if one was married. Most of the brakemen and conductors were on their 2nd or 3rd marriage.

I was considered a Nam era vet, and I never got near Nam. The closest was on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal for a few days. I was ground zero in the Cuban Missile crisis and in out of there for 2 years.

My joke/reality, I was in more danger as a reserve in the mid to late 1960’s in the DC area with all the hate the military bs. We didn’t wear our uniforms the last 2+ years to meetings nor on our 2 week active duty each year.

Your brother and my younger BIL who served in Nam/Country were the real vets.

Apparently, all most all of our railroads are now basically one railroad.

So, the Pension Board can’t meet because of covid 19, but disabled pensioners can be called back to service? There’s something wrong with this picture.

...and they're disabled, not retired. The other thing is that while even the military can recall someone to duty they can't force them to pass requalifications on things that they "just don't seem to get anymore".

No district attorney is going to want uncertified individuals handling driving, communications, evidence, bookings, prisoner transfer, and certainly not firearms. What good would they serve? building custodian?

Would their legitimate medication usage from their disability adversely affect their job performance, putting themselves or others at risk?

You served your country in uniform, and you served at sea. For that you deserve a big thank you. It doesn’t matter where you serve, there’s always the potential for something bad to happen. Sadly, we know that all too well, and today, the dangers have increased for just about everyone who wears a uniform.

"You cannot reveive a pension and SSDI at the same time."

I'm not talking about SSDI. There are two Social Security disability programs. I was already retired, and receiving a pension. Two years later I qualified for Social Security disability. That was 15 years ago. When I turned 65, I was rolled over into regular Social Security.
