Too cloudy last night. Trying again tonight.
In the Savannah Ga area. West, I was in my front yard (West was like the full Moon...you could see it anywhere), Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp from a number of locations around town and in a couple of dark sky locations too.
Halley, once while standing in my front yard under a street light, and, besides many other times, from Ft. Pulaski in Savannah (where I am from). My club was having a public session out there, and, the local news got to hear about it. We had 4,000 (park estimate) show up and had 6 telescopes. Everyone had a great time, except for the local news team who showed up and turned on a spot light. They were almost attacked.
Bright comets are rare. Most are right on the edge of naked eye, or, dimmer.
One of my favorites was IRAS-Araki-Alcock in 1983. It came very close to Earth, and, you could watch it move just standing there looking.
If you are interested, check Sky and Telescope’s website or spaceweather.com. If there is a reasonably bright anything coming up, they will let you know.
Glad you and the family got to see it. There are still a few nights to see it this week. Too cloudy for me last night.
