Those who have served multiple combat tours (especially more than 2) are carrying psychological burdens and scars which I doubt the rest of us can ever fully appreciate.
Of course there are a few “Sociopaths”, as in every walk of life, who are not affected emotionally by all the suffering and killing and dying around them.
However, sociopaths do not commit suicide, for the very reason they are not burdened with normal human emotions including empathy and sense of responsibility. It is said in the psychological literature that a true sociopath is incapable of feeling depression, for example.
