Big Ten canceling non-conference games a sobering moment for college football
Yahoo ^ | July 9, 2020 | Dan Wetzel

College football’s house of cards of a 2020 season collapsed on Thursday. In this case, it was by design — a voluntary and preemptive reshuffling and retreat. The Big Ten announced it was packing up and building its own place — canceling all non-conference games and playing a league only slate of nine, or maybe 10 contests. It’s an attempt to maximize control in the hope that it might make it through the COVID-19 pandemic. No one knows if it will work, but smaller, swifter and more cautious seems to make sense.

So, are you saying that your entertainment is more important than some little child's life? 🤔

I think you have hit on something here. Without sportsball, people have discovered other hobbies. I have a relative who works at Home Depot and they can't keep building materials, soils or landscape items in stock.

People have found other means of entertaining themselves and when a customer figures out that they no longer need your product (or want to deal with the SJW posturing that comes with it) you are sunk. Sports are in serious trouble.

Cancelling Ohio State/Oregon is a travesty. That was the biggest game of the year.

As long as one American has coronavirus, we must have a brutal Stalinist Police State.

It’s time for universities to stop offering athletic scholarships. Go back to their original purpose and quit serving as feeder systems for professional sports.

This is part of the negotiation phase.

Time is short though. People are going to have to move thru negotiation and get on to acceptance, and then grief.

No football this fall.

No college ball because of the Chinese flu, no NFL ball if one has any principles. No high school ball for the same reason as no college ball, liability management on the part of those in charge of such things.

Life goes on. Good opportunity for the players to get their books in order and to address any *coughcough* remedial issues. Good opportunity for the fans to just go enjoy life in other ways. Good opportunity for the coaches to pray that they'll be kept in the university's employment lest they have to liquidate a CD or something to pay the mortgage...

Wouldn’t this be a good time to defund the useless academics who indoctrinate and don’t educate?

Enhance the STEM departments, and diminish or abolish grievance studies departments.

I hope to God you’re being sarcastic, but I have a sinking feeling you’re not.

You make it sound as if there was going to be a season. Don’t think it is gonna happen.

The good news about this is with no football players, they can cancel about half the “Studies” courses. Guess which subset of the students fill their schedule with those classes.

They also played baseball during the 1917 pandemic. This is from a Chicago White Sox game:

imo, if we would have isolated the vulnerable instead of forcing lockdown on young people, we would have been thru most of this virus run by now....we completely turned nature on its head by what we have done.....

now, there is no end game...goalposts have moved multiple times......

I'm hoping college basketball will be played....

Maybe the lack of spectator sports will prompt some people to get off their duff and participate.

Golf courses are open in my area. Hunting; cycling. Even tennis can be played at a "safe" distance.

Heck, my yard is looking better than it has in years, mostly because I'm not sitting in front of the TV watching sports.

When you think about it, sitting around watching sports is a huge time sink.

How will college football athletes showcase their skills for the dying NFL?

Maybe they can schedule a Kaepernick workout and not show up. And when nobody drafts them, they can take a knee while slinging burgers at McDonalds.

What is the Mac conference going to do now? If the SEC does this as well the FCS teams in the south will go under.
