Op-Ed: If Black lives matter to colleges, they’ll divest from campus policing

Under intense pressure from mostly Black community organizers, some local governments are responding to demands to defund the police and divest from law enforcement. The push to reduce police budgets and reliance on police intervention in noncriminal matters has been accompanied by calls to invest in more resources for people and communities. Not surprisingly, the same demands advanced by police abolitionists off-campus have also emerged from students, faculty and staff at colleges and universities around the country. In some cases, that has already happened. The University of Minnesota, for example, responded to the demand of the undergraduate student government by swiftly discontinuing the use of local police for additional law enforcement and specialized services for university events.

I am 100% in favor of college getting rid of campus police. Let us see how students at Yale surrounded by New Haven, students at Columbia, students at U Penn, students at U Chicago, and students at USC surrounded by South Central LA, do when the locals have unimpeded access to the campuses and students.

Universities need to be purified. Nothing says purity like book burning, statues, burn down the buildings, smash all the windows.

Our local University has installed emergency call boxes all over campus. The are marked by a bright blue light. Stand anywhere on or near campus and you’ll see at least four or five at a time—they are that closely spaced. But turn away from the campus and there are no blue lights anywhere. I guess would-be rapists are confined to campus.
