Not evidence of "honesty", but certainly evidence of "wisdom." Generally I have found wiser men to be more honest, but it's not a certainty.
I don't think anybody's arguing that its not dangerous. There is disagreement as to the degrees of danger and our reaction to it as a people.

Just wishing to believe something should not be the goal. Finding the truth should be. If wishes were fishes, we'd all...uh. have a lot of fishes (forgot how that one went). We all want the good guys to win at the end of the movie. that is a wish to believe. In life, they don't always win. That is reality.
Okay, so we agree finding the objective truth is the important part. So let's look for the evidence of what is actually true, and let us toss out what is clearly incorrect or misleading.
