A police shooting at a crowded Walmart in San Leandro, California, fatally wounded a man brandishing a baseball bat. Graphic cellphone video of the officer-involved shooting, which circulated widely online, shows responding officers tasing suspect Steven Taylor, 33. He then refused to drop the bat and was shot, leaving a trail of blood on the floor as he stumbled away. Despite life-saving measures, Taylor died from his injuries at the scene. The use of deadly force is under investigation.

That’s what the bay area news wrote about it. Watch the video.

Now that we have girl cops, the threshold for shooting someone is nice and low

One shot should have been enough. The problem there lies with taking proven revolvers from police and replacing with 17 round semi-automatics.

I dont have a problem with this shooting. Cops provided warning, attempted less leathal force, perp continued to approach, one shot and perp drops the bat and then moves away.

What I DO have a problem with is the yahoos that continue to shop and do not get out of the line of fire.

I recognize your quick thinking and bravery in using the jacket.
Did the police in this case have jackets?

You are right on the money!!

Female Detroit Police Officers are known to shoot for any damn reason they want! Got a knife? Bang! Bat? Bang! Finger nail trimmers? Bang Bang!

Male DPD would have wrestled with the guy after rushing him.

“I hate to be critical here but they shot him in the back while he was walking away from them, didn’t they???”

I don’t think that video shows the shooting. I think he’s already shot. I do not hear a gunshot and I think there’s a blood trail on the floor as he walks away.

“ He then was tazed. Still didn’t comply”

So the issue here is the man was ordered to drop a baseball bat and he did not comply. Non compliance of an order from a police officer is the justification for the use of deadly force.

Lets say hypothetically as the man turned to walk away instead of shooting and killing him an officer was able to come from behind him and take him to the ground and effect an arrest. After the man was indicted and charged would the death penalty be appropriate in this exact scenario? Would you be ok with this man receiving the death sentence and subsequently executed? If not then you must ask how was deadly force justified?

I was Detroit EMS.......they just arrived as I walked away with the bat.

We were suppose to wait for them to arrive first but it was a busy night.

It looks as if one officer shot him while he was holding the bat.

Then, after the man dropped the bat and was stumbling away, the officer shot him again.

Right now, it looks like a sad story. It looks like suicide by cop.

So holding a bat is a death penalty offense? I don’t understand why they coudnt clear the scene and wait til he calmed down. 2 armed cops and a guy holding a bat. They should have kept their distance until he calmed down or got someone with some people skills to talk him down. And they also shot him twice more after he dropped the bat and walking away. The ease of taking a life in the USA is scary.

Based on the blood trail barely visible on the floor, they shot him and he staggered away about 15 feet.

Could have grabbed a shopping cart or two and push him around or just use as a barrier.

Its not as glamorous as shooting but the perp didn’t hurt anyone at that point.

I started to post above that I’ve known men who could’ve disarmed that man of his bat singlehandedly.

But I figured no one would believe me. Thanks for letting everyone know how you did it. :-)

Of course, we don’t know the whole story about the man in Walmart, yet. Did he attack anyone with the bat? Waiting for more info...

A crowded Walmart? Aren’t they supposed to all be quarantined?

Really?

Some crazy guy is dead an you think it is great. I didn’t see where he hit or tried to hit anyone with the bat, was this really worth taking a life, even if it is the life of some drugged up idiot? I have my doubts and can’t get my head around anyone being happy about it. I hope he doesn’t have kids or a wife.

And they also shot him twice more after he dropped the bat and walking away.

You're right, that is what appears to have happened in the video.

Whether or not they needed to shoot him at all is one question.

But, imho, they shouldn't have shot him after he dropped the bat.
