Not only that but Larry Gatlin (of the Gatlin Brothers) actually had a girlfriend named Becky, which is also the name of the girl who got raped in the song. Yeah, I find it curious that the Gatlins never sued over that one or at least made a fuss of it.

Another piece of trivia, the Gatlin Brothers sang the national anthem at the 1989 World Series in San Francisco. Seconds after they finished, a major earthquake (the 6.9 Loma Prieta) rolled through the area.

It was probably by mutual agreement with some cash to sweeten it. You don’t release a song and a movie without a legal department doing CYA.

Wow, I didn’t know that Larry had a girlfriend named “Becky”. That makes the story even more interesting.

I was a child when the song was popular, but I knew the song and my big sister owned that 45” record. I have read old music magazines and articles about the Gatlin Brothers.

Apparently, in the 70’s and 80’s, Larry Gatlin was a drug addict and was an extremely unpleasant and obnoxious person. To put it mildly, he wasn’t well liked.

I wonder if the songwriter harbored a grudge against Larry Gatlin. Like you said, It’s surprising that the Gatlin Brothers didn’t object or sue.

Thanks for the info about the Gatlins and the World Series.
