Covid-19 death toll jumps 36% in Italy The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy has jumped by 168 to 631, an increase of 36%, the Civil Protection Agency said on Tuesday, the largest rise in absolute numbers since the contagion came to light on 21 February, Reuters reports.
The total number of cases in Italy, the European country hardest hit by the virus in Europe, rose to 10,149 from a previous 9,172, an increase of 10.7%.
The head of the agency said that, of those originally infected, 1,004 had fully recovered compared to 724 the day before. Some 877 people were in intensive care against a previous 733.

What kind of math is it to say an increase from 168 to 631 is “36%”?

The rapid flare up of cases in a particular area followed by a ‘burn-out’ leads me to believe that there is a small segment of the population that is very susceptible to infection by this virus and that the majority of the population is resistant. This virus will probably hit everywhere and then burn out as the susceptible people either die or gain immunity by recovering from the infection.

Never mind, just noticed my goof. The death rate went up BY 168, not FROM.

btw, if you live near that containment area they might take you as a volunteer to help with this quarantine. They have to deliver food to people and clean etc.

Actually, it says it jumped to 631 which is an increase of 36%. The prior number would have been circa 464.
