Back in the late 70s Ella did a public broadcast of most of her old standards with a number of musicians like Joe Pass. I made a tape from the broadcast and played it for years on long trips in the car until it finally wore out. What a gift she had!
When Doris Day passed, I was intrigued by the statement that she studied Ella’s singing to learn how to phrase and enunciate the lyrics.
The best female voice (or even best voice period) I’ve ever heard.
