Boy I’m 51 and there were (disgusting) times in my life into my FORTIES where I would eat a whole box of oreos at bedtime. Maybe 3 or more times a week for years while I was home recovering from an injury.

The rest of my diet at that time wasn’t any better.

My diet Before the injury wasn’t so great!

My weight went to horrific levels and when I got better I still ate terribly for another 5 years.

For 5 years now, at 51, i’ve been eating what I CALL a healthy diet. That’s a laugh :) But it’s not nearly like it was.

Yet my fasting tests never showed anything close to diabetes.

You read some health websites and it sounds like eating 4 Twinkies at one sitting one time can cause diabetes.

Perhaps it is genes.

Anyhow, i’m done taking chances or testing God’s patience.

It’s just odd that I didn’t get it.

Genetics certainly plays a part, as does choice (diet, exercise, alcohol, smoking, sleep, and on and on). History is replete with people supposedly in great shape who die young, and then there is someone like Keith Richards...who looks like death and probably should have died 40 yrs ago, who still rocks on. Some things you can control, some things you can’t.

Seriously excess sugar can wreak havoc beyond diabetes.

You have a healthy pancreas. People who have a weak pancreas have their system overwhelmed by what they are eating and they get sick.

This happens with a number of organs, liver, kidneys, gall bladder, heart basically all organs. People who have "lifestyle" health problems just have organs that are damaged to the point they break under the load.

Many of them never know they have the problem and if they cultivate healthy habits they may never know.

A dear friend of mine was a healthy sort of person, if we went out to eat he would have the broiled fish, steamed veggies, salad with no dressing and water. He walked every day. And then he got cancer. Yeah, life is not fair. They told him to change his diet to high calorie food because of the cancer treatments. He listened to his doctor and one evening he collapsed. They rushed him to the ER and found that his blood was so full of sugar that he had syrup in his veins.

Whither it was the cancer, the treatment or if he was already predisposed is up for debate. Weakened organs.
