The really nice thing about that turn signal is that if you push it forward it makes your headlights brighter. Other drivers show their appreciation and thanks for your attention to safety by momentarily brightening their headlights too. You welcome, fellow drivers.

Here in NYC signaling results in cars speeding up and not letting you in.
So the only effective way to change lanes in NYC traffic is to use the front corner of your car as the turn signal.
