So what causes a person to be both? I don’t know if I qualify as ambidextrous since I can only do certain things with a certain hand. I’m typically a lefty since I write and eat with my left hand. I do everything else with my right hand. I shoot, throw a ball, use tools, and everything else right-handed. I have a lot of confusion when somebody says turn left or turn right. I have to stop and think about something that comes natural to most people.

I am very similar. Learned things such as writing and holding a fork for eating are left handed. Natural things such as throwing a rock are right handed. I can do most things with either hand, but it does not feel comfortable,
nor is the result as accurate and smooth as with the preferred hand.
Just for kicks, I used to practice writing with both hands, simultaneously. It was the same sentence i would write with both hands as I am not THAT weird.

I eat left handed as well. I was able to write or bat either hand , just fell out of practice .

Me too!

I can write with either hand although each looks different so I have make a conscious decision to stick with one for banking/legal purposes.

I catch with my left, eat with my left, and punch/slap with my left but throw with my right. I confuse myself with a tennis racket and often throw the racket from hand to hand depending on what my opponent does. Ditto with a paintbrush. I can only knit left handed.

My doctor told me this is why I’m clumsy. I have to think too much!

Same with me - eat and write left, right for just about everything else except racket sports like tennis or squash, but am not ambidextrous. If someone asks me if I'm right- or left-handed, I just say "yes". ;-)

Being ambidextrous amazes me. RH here and nearly helpless with left in anything that requires fine-tuning.

I could have written your post (except I have no confusion when someone tells me to turn left or right) . I write, eat and shave left-handed. Most other things I do right-handed. I think they call people like us “multidextrous”.

Like you, I eat and write left handed but click a computer mouse right handed, use scissors or shoot in my right hand. Was taught to shoot by a lefty who also used their right hand. Other things like which hand to use a golf club I’m ambidextrous. Directional turning is fine but have known lefties who had problems with which way to turn a screw even when saying righty tighty lefty loosy.

In school, teachers tried to force me to write right handed. The problems of writing upside down or with a twisted wrist is easily solve by turning the paper to 1 o’clock for lefties.
