Well don’t feel bad LtCol.

..Not everyone can make Sargent Major.....:)

(full disclosure...have a ‘child’ who is attached to I Marine Expeditionary Force who is a Major....and another ‘child’ who just called it a day as a Major.

Best to you Sir!

Long live the Corp.!

It’s been said that a German general once categorized the potential of officers like this:

“I divide my officers into four classes as follows: The clever, the industrious, the lazy, and the stupid. Each officer always possesses two of these qualities.

Those who are clever and industrious I appoint to the General Staff. Use can under certain circumstances be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy qualifies for the highest leadership posts. He has the requisite nerves and the mental clarity for difficult decisions. But whoever is stupid and industrious must be got rid of, for he is too dangerous.”

What in your opinion limits capable officers to the rank of Colonel and what factors propel them to there general rank?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Not sure about the Marines Colonel but in the army apparently Lt. Col’s dictate our foreign policy. I remember them being battalion commanders, but maybe times have changed?
