“I watch the Hail Flutie game from start to finish. Both teams left everything on the field. I remember Miami RB Melvin Bratton steamrolled over the BC defense and scored several TDs on the dive play.”

I remember just before Miami scored their last touchdown they called time out and Bernie Kosar headed to the sideline. Not knowing, or caring, that a camera was pointed at him Bernie was very clear when he said “Lets play football, ram it down their F’n throats”.
My dad and I became Kosar fans that day. My dad traveled to Cleveland three times over Bernie’s career to watch him play.

I’m a UCLA fan and a Notre Dame fan

I'm also a fan of Occidental College, where I got my AB degree. The Oxy Tigers have a winning record over UCLA if you count the years when UCLA was known as California Normal School of Los Angeles, and they even won a few games against USC. At Oxy, the glee club still sings,

USC, we've got you beat!
Today, you'll meet defeat
From Oxy and the Black and Gold!
Those words were written in 1917 and were likely sung at the 1918 game in which the Tigers trumped Troy 7-6--the last time Occidental beat USC.

1925—Notre Dame 27 Stanford 10. The only time ND was ever invited to play in the Rose Bowl. ND won its first national championship against a Stanford squad led by the great Ernie Nevers.

At that Rose Bowl game, the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame's 1924 backfield--Stuhldreher, Miller, Layden and Crowley--rode their horses in the stadium.

Nothing tops the Fog Bowl in Chicago. Bears vs Eagles. You could not see the goal posts from the endzone stands

I used to love watching football games played on real dirt. I was especially fond of mud. The entire spectacle was marvelous. Don’t ask me why.

Nice list, but 1988 was Notre Dame’s 11th national title, not it’s 8th (some would even say 13th). But, while I have no quarrel with the top game being USC vs. Texas, the author is forgetting one of the greatest games ever played: the 1973 Sugar Bowl, the last played in old Tulane Stadium, the first ever meeting between two of the most renowned programs in college football history, with 7 lead changes and some storybook late-game heroics, all for the national title. Bear Bryant vs. Ara Parseghian. Better yet, I was there! Notre Dame 24, Alabama 23.

. . . with a quarterback who had the flu, in freezing cold, in the opponent’s stadium. It was absolutely a great game. Notre Dame earned its national title the following week by traveling to Southern California and waxing USC 54 to 0.

I remember listening to a (long forgotten) college game on the radio returning from somewhere when the announcers broke in with the news that App State just blocked a three point attempt and defeated Michigan, an upset for the ages. I couldn't believe it and told my wife those guys just made football history.

Fast forward to today and our daughter is a senior @ App State and it's a great school in a beautiful area of NC - they still discuss that win as though it was last season, as well they should.

Yea, there's an App for that.....

I have to void my retraction and list the specifics.

From Wiki (I know but):
In 1999 Northwest defeated Carson-Newman College 58–52 in four overtimes to defend the title. The game was the longest in NCAA football playoff history in number of extra periods, surpassing six contests that were extended by three overtimes. The broadcast analyst on ESPN called it the best college football game he’d ever seen. The game solidified ESPN’s interest in Division II football, prompting ESPN to cover the semi-final games.

I was looking in the early 2000 era and skipped looking at 99.

So I repeat, N W. Missouri State vs Carson-Newman College
