The first glimpse of the upcoming limited series shows us Mirren as the legendary monarch, who was Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796, making her the country's longest-ruling female leader. The series will show us Catherine toward the end of her rule in the 18th century, when she begins a steamy relationship with Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke), a military leader.
"When I was young I dreamed of freedom, I dreamed of breaking chains," Catherine can be heard saying in the trailer. "But as you get older, your choices narrow. So instead I gave us an empire, but I knew exactly what I was doing . . . I will not share my throne with anyone."
Watch the trailer for the four-part historical drama above before the series arrives on HBO this Fall.

I know!
That’s why he was in a can!
Well I totally agree with you that modern films have become ludicrous feminist propaganda attempts to make women look stronger than men, Catherine the Great was a powerful person who ruled up powerful empire and held the power of life or death over the vast majority of Russians. If I somehow traveled back in time and had to interact with her I'd be extremely respectful and cautious.
Well yeah, it’s that British food!.............
Amazon Prime has a Russian series called “Ekaterina”. The actress is stunningly beautiful. It’s a pretty good show too.

All interesting points. I agree with the first point about the problem of anachronisms. The tendency for creatives project our own self-preoccupations, and current realities/mentalities onto figures and events of the past can be highly irritating.
I am also tiring of Brits playing Russians...But alas, Catherine the Great was not Russian.
Thank you for the heads up. :)
Yes! what about the horse??
Skip this hysterical bilge with the old/feminist role model that .... wasn’t, in fact like the character presented.
She was much chunkier, and ran through the palace guard, paying them with favors. Nothing Cleopatra didn’t do, even to two Roman officers in major power. So there’s that.
Recommend instead “The Death of Stalin”- a black comedy that is simply brilliant, and is banned in current Russia, Kazahkstan, and Uzbekistan.
And for a coda: “Red Monarch” an even more tragic comedy of the Great Terror from the Moscow perspective. Beria played by David Suchet.
How did such a huge country, become communist. Answer- they had globalist banker help, all in the US btw— which is another library of information to support this, without question. And, the direction of WWI Kaiser Wilhelm and the German govt. backing Lenin— with bullion, and soldiers.
Her best part was in ‘Cal’
In her twenties she was hotter than than the lava from Kilauea. She exuded sex appeal. And she held on that incandescence far longer than any actress I can think of. Idiot lefty in real life, of course. But a brilliant actress.
Wanna see this.
Helen Mirren is a MARVELOUS actress, cf. The Queen, her portrayal of QEII in the aftermath of Diana’s death.
And no, I DGAF about Mirren’s politics.
Makes me sick when i think how they ruined the last season. For me it ended when Drogon carried Danaerys' body away. And that is where they should or could have stopped.
Jon on the throne. lol no pun intended
The “sex with a horse and the scaffolding broke” was slander made up by her enemies, as Kriggerel said.
Like Elvis, the official story from the palace was that she died on the toilet. I believe it, because if it was fake, they would have made up something more dignified.
Yup, she is guilty!
I love women. I really love independent, strong women.
I am tired of every form of entertainment being the strong woman forced down my throat. Everything has been feminized.
Young women can be inspired by strong successful people.
I cannot wait until this pendulum swings backwards.
True or not ? Ask the Volga Deutch.
My History prof in college told us this story in 1964 as swore it was true!
So the story goes WAY BACK......
She was quite stout as an older woman, but she hadn’t had surgical atrocities performed on her face, at least. Actresses don’t want to portray historical figures as they really looked.
I think Helen Mirren (originally Mironoff) is more Russian than Catherine the Great was!
