An Oral History of “Free Bird”
Garden and Gun ^ | July 17 , 2019 | CJ Lotz

Nearly fifty years after it was written, “Free Bird” is still the signature concert closer for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose final farewell tour wraps up in October in Manchester, Tennessee. Founding members Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote the song in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1970, and it wasn’t long before “Free Bird” and its extended guitar solo near the end became one of the band’s most well-known tunes and a live-show favorite.

One of the two songs you’re not allowed to play in guitar stores.

FB is also on the list of songs that school bus drivers aren't allowed to play before going on to the next pickup. Just ask Otto from The Simpsons who after picking up Bart and Lisa, borrowed the guitar that Bart was teaching himself to play, jammed away before launching into Free Bird, holding up traffic because the bus doors were still open. Otto was fired (but rehired towards the end of the episode) after making up time by taking a high speed short cut.

“Tuesdays gone” is a much better song imo.

I was given permission to go to Skynards last show at The Fox with my favorite uncle. But mom changed her mind at the last minute.

I was a good 10 year old boy. The reasons she gave was the debauchery I would witness, which I replied by pointing out I saw the same or worse when my parents threw a party.

To this day, we both regret her not letting me go.

Gotta be. “Freebird” and “Stairway to Heaven” - both overplayed.

I’d rather listen to this:

I prefer the Allmans, but Skynyrd has some great songs. I wouldn’t put Free Bird in the top 3, though. For me, that would Simple Man, Tuesday’s Gone, and Sweet Home Alabama.

“I’ve never heard the song. Yes, that is true.”

Are you an American?

“Tuesday’s Gone” is a beautiful song.

Also always liked “Comin’ Home.”

Shut up Yankee.

I was at a Frampton show and after he played Do You Feel apparently somebody yelled for Free Bird. He had a good laugh. “I just played the longest $#%^ing song in rock history now you want me to play the 2nd longest?!”

I'm sorry if this is sacrilege, but I think "Free Bird" is one of the stupidest songs ever written. That and "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger. Horrible lyrics. Tone-deaf melodies. Totally overhyped crap.

"Sweet Home Alabama" is by far a better anthem for Skynard. And I've always thought "Roll Me Away" was Seger's tour de force.

Love the song
When I got divorced in 1980 I threw a Free Bird Party.

I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird you can not change

A friend and I had moved way, way back to watch the finale of a WHo concert in the Tangerine Bowl...1981. Supposed to have been over 80,000 in attendance We were probably four rows from the edge of the rim, and somebody let rip with “FREEEEEEE-Biiirrrrddd!!!!!” Struck me as funny as hell, at the time.

There was a Mexican joint down in Old Town, San Diego, and in it there was a Mexican guitar player who would stroll up to my table every time I went there, and he would ask if he could play me a song. I always asked if he knew Freebird, just to get rid of him.
