James' dad was the head of the UNC Medical School. I didn't know James but I did know Livingston and Kate.
His song, Sweet Baby James, was written about his older brother Alex's son, James.
He wrote Fire & Rain in the psych ward of NC Memorial Hospital for heroin use. The ward in South Wing had previously been the Maternity Ward where I was born in 1955. Just across Manning Rd. was married student housing at the time (my dad was a 3rd year law student at the time). It is now a parking deck for the hospital.

Wonderful story, young’un.
I was born on Governor’s Island army base as the U-505 was towed into NY Harbor with the broom on its mast. This was when they were giving castor oil cocktails to the women to get them out fast, since the babies were being tucked into chests of drawers as they were running out of room in cribs.
So James Taylor is a Livingston cousin! Hmmm.
ames Taylor was one of our home town notables (Chapel Hill, NC) along with Charles Kuralt, and the men’s wear designer Alexander Julian.
