The U.S. submarine campaign against Japanese shipping is one of the most poorly known major factors in the Pacific War. It is well-documented in the two-volume Silent Victory by Clay Blair, Jr.

By the end of the war, the Japanese had darn near nothing left in the way of merchant shipping.

Again, as has been pointed out earlier in the thread, amateurs study tactics, professionals logistics. Marshall and Nimitz fought a masterful campaign against Japanese logistics with our submarines.
