From my understanding, from some people we talked to, there was apparently an argument inside. Some type of argument that ensued into a gun battle, Lt. Jeff Edwards told reporters.
The off-duty LAPD officer reportedly works in the Southwest Division and shot and killed a man during an altercation after feeling threatened.
The injured were transported to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Witnesses at the scene told CBSLA reporter Nicole Comstock they heard an argument before hearing seven or eight shots.
The investigation is currently ongoing, but the officer is not currently in custody as investigators look into what may have prompted the shooting including the possibility of self-defense.

I hate to be a broken record, but YouTube videos show that your statement, They don’t like being watched, is so very true.
Those are the magic word they are trained to say instantly and no more than that.
Actually a lot of people are never even charged based on “I felt threatened”. The circumstances show how reasonable that statement is. Or is not. And if a prosecutor thinks it is unreasonable, they will press charges. In the case of Zimmerman, the jury disagreed with the prosecutor. But in many cases, a review shows the feeling was reasonable and the person is never charged.
Zimmerman was getting his head pounded on concrete. I am sure the type of threat is paramount. Not just that one feels threatened.
To no surprise, the SeeBS reporterette doesn’t provide nearly enough details in her “news” report to understand what actually happened other than a body count.
“Not just that one feels threatened.”
Example: 110 lb woman. Three guys, all 200+ lbs. Blocking her exit. One pulls a knife. Can the woman pull a gun and shoot? Absolutely.
I pulled a gun once. Why? Returning from a hike. 8 guys drinking whiskey sitting on my car. I was alone and a long way from any help. They started to fan out to surround me. No word was spoken. I remembered I had my 22. I pulled it out and stared back, preparing to shoot whoever got to me first.
They didn’t rush me. I guess no one wanted to be #1. If they had, at least one guy was going to get a 22 bullet - all 40 grains of it - up his nose.
If I survived - and I wasn’t sure I would have - would I be charged? Eight to one. All 8 bigger than me. Don’t know. If charged, would I have been convicted? Don’t know. But based on circumstance and body language, I figured I might not live the day out if I didn’t do something. Could not have proved it, mathematically. But I’m pretty sure they were not surrounding me to congratulate me on my hike!
Or Daniel Shaver, who was begging and sobbing for his life, as he was gunned trying to obey an officer who told him to cross his legs on his knees and crawl toward the officer with his hands in the air... try doing it. He was shot repeatedly with a rifle at close range as he was flat on the ground. There is a video. It’s heartbreaking.
And they know where you live. Try being on a jury and finding an officer guilty of murder.
If I were on the jury, you gave a perfect example of justifiable use of deadly force had anyone of them continued to move in on you.
Or got tired of them offering when he was just trying to get out of there in a hurry. I actually get aggravated by those sample people. And if a company has a booth set up to demonstrate anything I avoid that part of the store like the plague.
Disparity of Force is a legal concept that supports this.
Reasonable is subjective and varies by juries. Our problem is lawyers want dumb juries so whats “reasonable” can be worked to their favor.
It always comes down to what a reasonable person would accept. But it wasn't a reasonable person, it was a cop. Feeling threatened is plenty for him, but not for a civilian.
or Treyvon banging your head against the cement
It’s a rather simple equation, lawful use of deadly force that is.
JAM
Jeopardy- that actor is reasonably putting you or another innocent ( key word there) at risk of grave harm or death.
Ability- the actor has the means or capabilities to inflict that gave harm or kill you ( note a weapon is not mentioned- the actor is the weapon, the weapon if any is just a tool)
Imminence- (okay, not an “M” word but it works better than “I”) the actor is reasonable likely to act out the inferred or stated threat as possessed by his ability to jeopardize you with his ability....
Innocence is a key to defense of justification; in most cases, one must be innocent of a crime to invoke self-defense, that meaning the person claiming self defense must be able to be seen as the one placing another in jeopardy by having an imminent ability to inflict grave harm or death....
Remove any of he above factors and self defense is likely not a justifiable defense.
Several of the LEOs I know quite well have argued that being a cop, even off duty, provides them additional top cover ( qualified immunity/excusable action compared to a none sworn person. We shot with a local Prosecuting Attorney and I brought up that topic and Mr. Prosecutor said they better insure that if they shot someone with that attitude they’d better not do in his county.....
The cops sometimes suck. I’ve argued against their actions many times on FR. But there are ALSO a lot of great cops doing a dangerous duty well.
JAM isn’t a bad way of looking at it. I’ll remember it. Decades since I last pulled a gun in self-defense and I’ll be very happy if I never need to again! I’ve been shot at (badly) in combat. Shot at by idiots with guns hiking. Probably came closer to dying those times. I know myself. I don’t panic when shot at. So I’ll trust my instincts. If I can get away, great. If not...
BTW: I spend more time practicing my jogging than my shooting!
;>)
Yep! And if Po-Po Jack-boot instigated the fight because somebody “disrespected his space” or “looked at him wrong”, you can bet all of those cameras in this Costco will have malfunctioned simultaneously as well.
Funny how that works.
Yep. People are absolutely losing it in this country.
