Trump says there was 'illegal spying' on his campaign after Barr backs off explosive claim

President Trump said Thursday that he agrees with Attorney General William Barr’s explosive, since-clarified assertion that he believes the FBI was “spying” on Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

“I think what he said was absolutely true — there was absolutely spying into my campaign,” Trump told reporters inside the Oval Office before a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. “I’ll go a step further: It was illegal spying, unprecedented spying. And something that should never be allowed to happen in our country again. And I think his answer was a very accurate one.”

On Wednesday, Barr touched off a firestorm during a hearing on Capitol Hill, saying he believes “spying did occur” in the federal investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia while defending his review of the probe.

By the end of the hearing, though, he backed off his explosive claim.

“I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal,” Barr said during testimony before the Senate Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies subcommittee.

“Spying” is a pejorative term not normally used to describe domestic counterintelligence investigations.

“I think spying did occur,” he said. “The question was whether it was adequately predicated. And I’m not suggesting it wasn’t predicated. I need to explore that.”

MSM just attempting to mislead the public with deceptive headlines.

Barr did not “back off”.

A.G. Barr and President Trump are not at odds, as the headline would like to portray.

They want to diffuse the damage of Barr’s statement to their narrative by making it sound as if something changed, but it didn’t.

Comey doesn’t think so. But let’s see if he can convince his wife that sleeping with another woman isn’t adultery.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In an interview a few days ago Comey said it wasn’t spying. It was COURT ORDERED SURVEILLANCE.
Nobody questioned him on this even though it is one of the most ridiculous things he has ever said.
“Do not tell me Barr is a weakling, too.”
This is fake news - Barr didn’t back off anything. He said he believed there was spying - and that he planned look into whether or not it was “predicated” (justified, legal).
I’m sure Barr knows the spying was illegal, since the FISA warrant was illegally based on the Steele dossiere, which was known at the time to be a fabrication paid for by the Clinton campaign - a fact not made known to the FISA courts.
But Barr had nothing to gain by making those allegations before the committee until he has built the case. So he stuck to the facts: there was spying, but it remains to be seen whether or not it was legal. I think this was just the right position for Barr to take before a hostile committee at this time.
The fake news said Barr backed off in order to imply that his original statement (that there was spying) was half-cocked. He didn’t back off anything.
Funny how the left which spent two years demonizing a president with zero evidence is now bunched up over the imprecision of a word.
Barr wasn’t “backing off”; he was explaining “spying” to a dunce.
The portion of this article where the author describes Michael Isikoff”s article about Carter Page this way:
“The story, by Yahoo News chief investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff, was later cited in an FBI application for a surveillance warrant against Page. Isikoff’s reporting on Christopher Steele, the former British spy who prepared the controversial dossier about Trump, was also a major part of the so-called FISA application to wiretap Page.”
The author is so misleading with this portion of the story. It has been proven, and is now widely known, that the DOJ used Isikoff’s story fed to him by Steele, to give Steele’s dossier legitimacy, (it’s verified by an independent source, Isikoff. The classic circular verification).
Yahoo is more fake news than Reuters. Reuters is more fake news than AP. AP is more fake news than Washington Post. Washington Post is more fake news than New York Times. New York Times is more fake news than CNN.
None of them have ANY credibility any more.
EXCELLENT POST, ROKLOK...
That is exactly what AG Barr said to the congressman, he was trying to calm him down as the congress person was very upset with Barr's choice of words...
And yes...AG BARR asked the congress person if ‘unauthorized surveillance’ phrase worked better for him..and Barr had a look of total disgust on his face when he looked directly to the congressperson, and said that ...
MEDIA IS THE FAKE NEWS SAYING THE AG BACKED DOWN ...TOTAL BULL SHIT... I watched the entire committee meeting LIVE on c span .
