Typical menus included coarse bread with salty fish, baked cheese, lentils and spicy wine.

The McDonald's of their day? Wouldn't fly today, though. Wonder what kind of salty fish they were serving? I never put salt on my fish. Always seems to ruin it, no matter how little I add.

You don’t enjoy smoked fish? Kippered snacks?

The writer should have said ‘salted fish’, meaning preserved.................

If electricity went permanently kaput and that refrigerator became a useless box, you might rethink how you use salt.

Coarse bread? Adulterated with chalk or the like.

Spiced wine? Probably to try to cover the taste of bad wine.

Salty fish meant "preserved". Much like salt cod, etc.

Say, didn't you ever see the "Good Eats" epi on baking a fresh whole fish in salt? Something like 4lbs salt to 1lb fish.

Salt is used as a meat preservative.

Dried salt cod (and other types of fish) have been on the menu for thousands of years and are still widely consumed today, particularly in Southern Italy, Portugal, Spain, Scandinavia, Scotland, Iceland, Canada, and ethnic neighborhoods in the USA.

I think it was dried with salt; fresh fish layered in salt to preserve them for later.
