Freaks attract Freaks,they band together because they are so far out of the mainstream. John Samuel Waters Jr.is far out and he said society caught up to him.He produced many sick movies.One of his movies was turned into a musical and became a hit-Hairspray.The early people he worked with are mostly dead from AIDS.His main star was mentally ill.My guess is when you see normals hanging with these people it should tell you they are not normal and just acting.
