Learning Russian in the 60s was rather rare. I was in linguistics and the word
as that if you learned Russian well you would be getting a recruitment call from a nice person from the CIA.

My experience was that nany post Woodstock “radical hippies” took conversational Russian classes for several reasons, mostly “c’est chic”.
