As a college admissions scandal rocks the University of Southern California, athletic director Lynn Swann wants everyone to know he had no idea what was going on. In his first comments since the Department of Justice indicted dozens of wealthy parents and several more college coaches and administrators, the NFL Hall of Famer told the Los Angeles Times that the first time he learned of the scandal was a phone call early Tuesday morning:

Agreed. Being the guy in charge and claiming ignorance is not exactly a great career move.
I remember Hussein Obama used to learn about things earlier in the day via the newspapers or cnn. It is bullshit.
They’re too busy with this and college sports corruption...
...
Another way of thinking is that this goes beyond sports and could be an opening shot at taking down the taxpayer subsidized liberal indoctrination centers.
agreed, If you don’t know what is going on where you have primary responsibility, then you are incompetent.
Hardly. You think the athletic director personally validated every recruit offer? Let alone folks for the crew team or tennis? Be serious.
I doubt highly most athletic directors at major universities could even tell you the name of their coach for minor sports like crew, golf, tennis or shooting and the like.
Thats like saying a college dean is incompetent because he didnt personally approve every syllabus for every professor at the school
“Lynn doesnt know what blind sided is.”
I can’t say how much he knows, but I suspect most wide receivers have a lot of experience being blind sided.
Like I earlier had opined....
The ‘wrong’ people were getting the spoils.
A bribe is a bribe, be it a new wing on the library or paying someone to take the test..Bad enough ‘distinguished alum’ get a boost up and don’t even try convincing me that all these political offspring (presidents kids) ALL rate Brown, Stanford, Harvard etc as their own life is fairly hectic and an ‘ace student’ is guaranteed a walk on.
Name means a lot and (although not a fan) I always figured if Jr Earnhart had been the son of Dale Smith the plumber, it would have required a ticket to get into the oval other than to keep the heads operating.
I had cited a certain Senator and pResidential hopeful who would not only had washed out of Annapolis and definitely flight school had he made it that far if his blood line wasn’t career Naval Officers.
I know RHIP is a ‘truism’ but to turn down an otherwise ‘perfect’ candidate and fill the slot with a ‘relative’ is a form bribery also.
“Doesnt seem very feasible that an AD was so IN THE DARK about something like this...Ill be disappointed if its proven, though youre likely right...Always liked Lynn Swann”
Agree, my first thought too. It’s not like the colleges pay them $500k a year and never bother to talk them. Not to mention that these fake athletes were taking up scholarship slots and then not bothering to show up, so it would be tough for him not to notice something funny.
Agree also, was a classy player - never took a knee either.
AMEN!!!
That, brother, should be the headlines!!!! All in Congress are to blame. Even down to city government, there are ‘Americans’ who steal like there is no tomorrow!
In our county in TX., we had a JP who rigged the lottery with his brother and won two of them! Divorced his wife before it all came down and gave her the assets of the marriage. Had another county employee putting tires on his vehicles at our expense. So goes the USA when bribes and stealing are happening when we are BROKE!! Bring in more illegals and spend billions on them IS a problem but not to stealing politicians and business owners.
“You tell me what D-1 major university AD knows the names of the students of their tennis, crew, golf, etc, etc, teams.”
I think you might be surprised at how many do know those students. At my alma mater, Oklahoma State, the AD, Mike Holder, was the long-time golf coach so I’m sure he keeps tabs on that team. Plus, they are highly ranked right now. Same with the wrestling team that has wrestlers at 9 weights in the upcoming NCAA Wrestling Tournament. As a former coach, I expect he has a different take on staying aware of the student-athletes.
Even the awareness level of the university president has surprised me over the years. I was the head of a small student group in Army ROTC in the 70s and the university president at that time definitely knew me, even on a 20,0000-student campus. My wife and I encountered the university president and his wife when my son was at OSU and they asked about our student. Upon telling them he was a tuba player in the marching band, they knew exactly who we were talking about and gushed about their interactions with the band and the personality shown by the tuba players during marching band shows.
I did not read up all that much on this situation.
Some bought their way into athletics as part of the bribe??
wow. If that was the case, it had to be really obvious to the other players who made it on merit.
Rigged the lottery. Bought tires. SMH.
Many humans are weak when the opportunity to steal is so overwhelmingly easy!!
I don’t know if I would pass the test.
We have a system that has made it so tempting and again, easy to steal from the taxpayers, that’s it’s getting harder and harder to find folks who won’t.
My friend worked for Strom Thurmond back in the day. I think that’s how you spell his name. He said he was given a credit card and told “don’t worry” about using it, it’s all covered
NO ONE should have credit cards in congress or in government!!
What are they, Macy’s?
I used to like him UNTIL now. The BS detector is off the scale. EVERYBODY knows of those in “pay to play” from college admissions, athletics and government.
I don’t think anyone on the planet (O.K. maybe a few) didn’t know the rich were bribing their kids entranced into major colleges. They would have to be pretty fricking stupid otherwise (especially those in higher education upper echelon or part of the rich and famous).
It is like saying, actresses slept there way too the top? I didn’t know? This payment scheme had to be one of the biggest open secrets on campus. It’s just that it was going so long, and common, it was ignored.
Big misconceptions about what happened in the comments here. The applicants werent getting scholarships, nor getting on athletic teams. They were being flagged for preferential admissions as non-scholarship athletes. If there were scholarships there would be a whole other level of NCAA involvement, and it never could have worked. I doubt Swann knew anything, or cares much about non scholarship rowing recruits. He probably should be fired though, because the scandal makes USC look terrible, and more importantly their football team sucks.
more importantly their football team sucks...
LOL Well that’s definitely a GOOD reason!
And thanks for the other info.
Also, deeply entrenched in our two-tier justice system. The rich always skate (surprised justice are acting now).
He was brought in to be a face for USC sports and do fundraising. He isn't there to micromanage the department. The crooked administrators were doing it before he got there. He wasn't named in the indictment.
Well there you go.
That makes sense.
I guess we will never know.
And he wasn’t indicted so it doesn’t matter.
