Go to 4:00 in this recording and you’ll here them warned of light to heavy rain straight ahead. A couple of minutes later they request to go around it.

They were flying from right to left and crashed at the red X.

The storms were already dissipating, but they had just flown through an outflow boundary from the storms. The outflow boundary is the thin blue line that goes from lower left to top right that is just to the right of the crash point.

The outflow boundary can be pretty rough. If there is a roll cloud, you don’t want to be in the air near it.

A United flight flew over the accident site on approach to IAH 10 minutes later without incident. They reported the weather moderately choppy.

The NTSB says they have a five second video of the plane from a jail security camera, but they aren’t going to share it anytime soon.

I wonder if that’s standard procedure or if they suspect something.

Early in an investigation it is normal for the FBI to be involved.

Yep, not a microburst.

Good info. Not a microburst. Not supported by the weather snapshots. Even extreme weather (short of structural failure) won’t result in 55 degrees nose-down at 275 knots vertical velocity at 700 feet above the water.

IF he detected severe weather on his radar, requested vectors around it, and was denied due to traffic conflicts this could be a major FAA problem. He could have declared an emergency and changed his heading but if this was IFR it would be a serious violation and he probably thought he could tough it out. The first rule of flight is that the pilot in command is responsible for the safe outcome of the flight but it would be a tough call to make if he did not have visual separation.

All true, but it looks like it was just rain.

What's your theory?

Video, somewhat poor quality, of the plane in its final moments.

From the NTSB:

The recording included the final portion of the flight; however, the quality of the audio is poor.

There are times during the recording when the content of crew discussion is difficult to determine, at other times the content can be determined using advanced audio filtering.

The crew was in communication with air traffic control and were being provided radar vectors for the runway 26L approach into George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Crew communications consistent with a loss control of the aircraft began approximately 18 seconds prior to the end of the recording.

The flight data recorder arrived at the NTSB’s Recorder Lab Sunday at 11:45 p.m. The memory module was disassembled, cleaned and dried, and download of the data was achieved Monday afternoon. Initial review of the data revealed:

The accident flight was captured, and the FDR contained a total of about 54 hours of data from 17 flights.

There were approximately 350 parameters recorded by the FDR detailing the motion of the aircraft and operation of its engines, flight controls and other systems.

NTSB recorder investigators are currently verifying and validating the FDR data, and the NTSB plans to provide a summary in an investigative update in a few days.

Technical experts in the CVR group will convene in the coming week to review the entire recording and produce a transcript of the accident recording. It will be a time-consuming process to complete the transcript.

---

From Bloomberg News:

The communications captured on the cockpit sound recorder were “consistent with a loss of control of the aircraft,” according to a press release issued by the National Transportation Safety Board...…..The press release, offering a first glimpse of what happened on the Boeing Co. 767-300 as it was preparing to land at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport Feb. 23, still doesn’t explain its mysterious, abrupt dive.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-05/crew-recording-on-doomed-amazon-jet-reflect-loss-of-control

----

They have the voice recorder but say the recording is of "poor quality" -- but the voices are consistent with "loss of control", a coy description, seemingly. The airplane went down much faster than stories suggested previously. It must have been a very violent maneuver. Either it was a violent mechanical problem, or deliberate. Very unlikely to be either weather (microburst) or a load shift.

Thanks. It’s no surprise they lost control, but why?

Here’s the clearest video I’ve seen yet. The plane wasn’t spinning or tilting its wings at all. Just down at a steep angle:

The video is in the middle of the page. Scroll down some. Look at the trees to the left and the flag in the background. Lots of wind.

Another video that shows impact. There doesn’t appear to be any attempt to recover.
