Blue Origin held a groundbreaking ceremony in Huntsville, Alabama, Jan. 25 to formally mark the start of construction of a factory that will be used for building BE-4 engines. The company announced plans to build the factory there in June 2017, contingent on the selection of the engine by United Launch Alliance for its Vulcan rocket. ULA picked the BE-4 in September 2018.

The factory, scheduled for completion in March 2020, will build dozens of BE-4 engines a year for both Vulcan as well as Blue Origin's own New Glenn vehicle. Both rockets are scheduled to make first launches in 2021. Vulcan will use two BE-4 engines in its first stage while New Glenn's reusable first stage will be powered by seven BE-4 engines.

The facility will create more than 300 jobs, Smith said, with a total company investment of more than $200 million, figures similar to those that Blue Origin offered when it made it selection of Huntsville in 2017.

While Blue Origin builds the factory, it's continuing to test the BE-4 engine, which uses liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas propellants and is capable of producing up to 550,000 pounds-force of thrust. The company is building initial versions of the engine at its headquarters in Kent, Washington, and testing them in West Texas, where it also performs test flights of its New Shepard suborbital vehicle

This is why Huntsville is known as the “Rocket City”.

When they tested the Apollo engines at Redstone Arsenal, they quickly learned that they could not conduct the tests on over cast days. The low lying clouds funneled the noise off post and broke windows in Huntsville. Clear day, no problem.

Made me almost cry.
Bezo’s is a frigging tool but he and
Elon are showing both American ingenuity and what massive gov waste and cronyism NASA is all about.

How is that NASA heavy lift gazzilion billion dollar Mars whatever doing?

July marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing i hope President Trump uses that incredible American accomplishment to it’s fullest advantage this summer.

Haaahaaahaaaaa......maybe now you can get a job at the rocket engine factory and afford to get treatment. And maybe they will hire the AOC as a rocket scientist.

I don’t understand the ring worm comment. Alabama near Chattanooga has bare foot ring worm contagion?! Rocket Scientists walk barefoot?

In Alabama? No way. I believe Senator Patty Murray:

“I have stood on the line in Everett, Washington, where we have thousands of workers who go to work every day to build these planes,” Murray said in a Dec. 7 interview with National Public Radio. “I would challenge anybody to tell me that they’ve stood on a line in Alabama and seen anybody building anything.”

Murray knows about building airplanes?

Since when?

Airbus runs a nice factory in Mobile and Boeing has a rather large one in Charleston SC.

But the bigots and small minded Leftists of urban Seattle think you have to have a sociology degree from King County Kommunity Kollege to build a jet.
