Very minor point: In my day, little children knew not to openly challenge dangerously crazy men. Because, you know, bad stuff might happen.
She was running at him to throw a punch... and she was pretty damn big for a “12 year old”.
In my (and I suspect, your) day, children were not vicious thugs. I’m sorry but she asked for it and while the guy will get punished and deserves it as much as if he assaulted an adult, the day is coming when the laws are going to start looking at “children” in a different way.

And it sure like he was pushed first. That guy’s big mistake was that he did not quickly retreat out of that situation.

I disagree. We don’t have whatever happened before the video rolls, but he is shoved from behind at 6s in, and I’m pretty sure it’s by the girl who keeps coming at him, that he punches out.
They started the fight, not him, based on what I see in that video.

When surrounded and attacked (he was struck several times) by a pack of wild jackals, their age is absolutely irrelevant. I and any other sane adult with a normal instinct for self preservation would response the same - whatever the age of those attackers.
The reason little children in your day knew better than pulling that crap on grown men was because no adult would blame them for giving the punks a serious whooping.

I watched the video. Something was already going on, someone was being bullied by that crowd of “children.” The man intervened. The crowd reacted aggressively to him spoiling their fun. Some individuals in that crowd even assaulted him, from behind. First. Before he shoved anyone or threw a punch. One particularly aggressive not-so-little girl got in his face. He pushed her back. She came back at him. Then he threw the punch.
Was he wrong? Maybe, but at what point? He was certainly not “totally wrong.” He does not appear to be a “dangerous man assaulting children.” They appear to be assaulting him.
The video record provides him with plenty of excuses. Was he wise? Probably not.
A lot of the interpretation of his actions is going to depend on what that crowd of children were doing before he tried to break it up. Were they hectoring, or even physically threatening some one, as it appears? Who?
What was the adult’s relationship to the apparent possible victim? Who was/is ‘Emily’? What was her role in the activities and actions taking place before he intervenes? What did HE see that led him to step in in the first place?
There is always more to any story.

I’m 64 and, truth be told, probably would have done the same thing (assuming emotions were high). We live in an age of equal rights. The sex of the person coming at you is utterly irrelevant.
OTOH the girl who yelled at him as she approached him did not touch him and he pushed her away. He should have left at that very moment and she should have stayed away from him.

You happen to see, in the full video, the man’s wife and two little kids whom he was standing in front of... protecting them? There is a great deal more to this, FRiend. Just saying. These “children” may not be what they seem. Find the Live Leak video which does not edit out the family members, or this guy being shoved.... from behind.
