Very lame summary in the original article.

What’s actually happening is a conversion to a form of copper that provides some catalytic properties similar to those of gold. They start off with copper and they finish with copper and at no point do they actually have gold.

Now if they want to refer to their finished material as “gold-like” in some chemical properties, especially as regards some specific catalytic properties, that’s maybe reasonable, but whoever slapped together the original article probably learned to write about science from Al Gore.

"Actually, I love these kind of articles. They have some journalist that does not have a clue about what they are talking about ...."

So... in other words, it is pretty much like 99 out of 100 news articles published these days.

“into a new material “almost identical” to gold”

anybody know what the exchange rate is for converting AlmostGold into real gold?

Imagine this stuff in critical digital chips that control defense weapons. As they age, the electrical properties of gold recede back to the original properties of copper. China would become the top military power before we could recover.

Reality. Works as a catalyst.

“The copper nano particles achieved catalytic performance extremely similar to that of gold or silver,” Sun and collaborators said in a statement posted on the academy’s website on Saturday.

Re: Sapphires and rubies in the sky

“Science Daily” has an article about a “super-Earth” exoplanet that formed under intense heat and orbits very close to its host star.

It is about 21 light years away, and it shimmers in red and blue colors, possibly because it is rich in aluminum oxide that has been transformed into rubies and sapphires by the great heat.
