And thus we highlight a major difference between “conservatives” and “liberals” ...
The movie came out at a time of crisis in my life when I wasn’t tuned into media entertainment at all. Business at college and work then put a low priority on television as a form of entertainment.
I haven’t had t.v. service for almost 10 years now, so I’ve been totally out of that loop.
I once heard or read art described as transforming the personal into the universal, and you could probably describe a classic the same way. Gwynne appears to have no understanding of the wide appeal of a movie like “A Christmas Story” and what makes it a classic.
We should make her write a theme on the subject. If she does well, her major award will be a beautiful leg lamp.
I believe it was a compilation of short stories that appeared in the book “In God We Trust...All others pay cash.”
I think that title is a riot.
Indeed. I’m not even willing to say it’s a bad movie, just that I don’t like it. Some of my family members do, and when they want to watch it, I have other things to do in other rooms.
My dad didnt see it until a few years ago.
He refused to see it because we made fun of him for taking us to the Chinese restaurant on Christmas. Mom didnt want to cook. We were the only caucasians in the restaurant on Christmas. We always brought up the movie when he did.
“This wasn’t a movie about Christmas for kids, it was a movie about Christmas for adults who used to be kids.”
Exactly. Helped us to remember some of the high points, just as “Animal House” brings many of us who were fraternity members in the 1960s back to those wonderful, hilarious, freer days, where the drive-in scene brought back the memory of the “Tale of the Girl With the Golden Arm.”
The makers of The X-Files clearly acknowledged their debt to Kolchak, and if I recall correctly, Chris Carter himself said that without Night Stalker, there would have been no X-Files. As such, McGavin made a few guest appearances on the show as Arthur Dales, the aging, retired FBI agent that had first stumbled on the X-Files back in the 1950s.
Susan Clark was married to Bob Clark?
I thought she was married to Alex Karras.
An obnoxious Canadian Leftist she is.
But a cute one at one time.
Oh, I think you're right, I could swear she was.
There is never any joy in Leftville.

Words of wisdom.
lol
I’ve known Jewish people who liked to go to Chinese restaurants on Christmas eve/day in part because they are less crowded.
I didn’t read the article. I also own the “collectors” edition.
I don’t think it’s really a very well done or well written movie, but I think it has some amazing themes and ideas. In the hands of a Spielberg and some professional comedy writers it could have been amazing.
We still watch it every year though. It’s B-movie feel, at the end of the day, is part of its charm.
It reads like an article dashed off when the author had to come up with something, anything.
Pssst. Don’t tell anyone, but I still laugh at Asian people.
And black people.
And hispanic people.
And white people.
Etc.
People are funny, and each culture brings with it it’s own comic relief.
or the Grinch.
I was discussing “A Christmas Story” with a friend the other day.
My take: “A Christmas Story” is nostalgic, even sentimental, while at the same time getting big laughs out of its flawed, and therefore eminently believable, characters.
That’s one tough combination to pull off.
In fairness, if I squint hard enough I can just make out some of the points Gywnne Whatserface makes in her tedious review.
But all these prove is that you can nitpick anything if you pick long enough.
“A Christmas Story” is a real slice of life. We’ve all been in similarly ridiculous situations around the holidays.
In my case, it wasn’t a Red Ryder BB gun but a copy of the Avalon Hill wargame “Jutland.” I never wanted anything so much in my life — and once having gotten it, I never really mastered the game.
But 50 years later, it’s still sitting on a shelf in my closet. And it did help spark a lifelong interest in the Great War. Thanks, Mom and Dad!
Bingo... :^)
