Something happens to shows that go on for too long. The show starts having all sorts of "special" episodes where they preach at us. Then the actors start saying their lines to the audience rather than the other characters. People who love the show accept it because they've gotten to know the characters and like them despite the plot lines and hamfisted dialogue.
But if a show starts out of the gate that way...
