I think the political correctness bunch “nudged”* us away from it because it is so very descriptive, and all too often true - especially in Texas along the Rio Grande where they literally swim (or wade) the Rio Grande.

Let me add one word of caution, here.

Almost all Americans of latin-american ancestry WILL become very angry if that word is applied to them. They are proud of their being a citizen of the US ^in the proper manner^.
