I didnt realize they could dive that deep. That's what I mean. They can't.
To: Yardstick
Also, I just looked it up, the max depth of the Black Sea is about 2km. So yeah, if only we could get archaeologists down to the lowest point in the Black Sea...maybe we could get some lawyers and journalists embedded too! :)
To: Interesting Times
Thanks for the ping. I wonder how they found it that far down.

I didnt realize they could dive that deep. I wonder how long and involved is the decompression process.ROVs make it unnecessary for divers to go down there.

Sounds like a plan :)
Yeah that seemed awfully deep but there was that video of the divers and it was on the interwebz so I figured it had to be true...

Oh, way cool! Thanks for the ping.

"Yeah that seemed awfully deep but there was that video of the divers and it was on the interwebz so I figured it had to be true..." Yeah -- but, it was from The Guardian -- so, I knew there was a .9944 probability that it was bogus...

Well, yeah. I guess I was thinking they were kinda like the NYT, where on non-political subjects they’re usually not totally out to lunch...

Thanks Red Badger. Robert Ballard's team found the first one of these, down in the anoxia layer, just a few days after the passing of Willard Bascom, who'd predicted that there would be such a find.

And for a number of years in the future, it'll probably show up by modern proxy in movies set in ancient times. The Santa Maria is believed to have been between 18 and 36 meters long, and was the largest of the three ships of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas. The Nina and Pinta were smaller -- and the
Santa Clara, a modern replica, is generally visiting various ports around the US. Boarding her makes a definite impression about the daring of Age of Sail mariners.

It'll take someone a good while just to figure out how to bring the thing up and keep it in the same kind of water while it is conserved -- piece by piece, or scoop the whole thing at once. The cargo in jars will be long gone I'm sure, but it would be worthwhile to pull one (if there are any) and see what's inside, just water, or some residue of whatever it used to be (wine, olive oil, fish).

I think they used ethylene glycol on the Vasa or Mary Rose
