This is a blog post. There are FReepers who prefer to read the Huffington Post, MSN, and CNN for their news. They have something against blogs, yet... Yet...
It was Benjimen Franklin's blog and Thomas Paine's blog which made the real difference in the War of Independence.

Some of my favorite pop songs from 1971:

Southern California. Corona Del Mar 1971. Skin diving a lot. Working in dads tool and die shop in S. El Monte. Visiting friends Tony Capanna at Hot Rod City in Torrance. Keith Black of Keith Black Racing Engines. Ed Iskiderian of Isky Cams. Building mini bikes. Jr. All American Football, Corona del Mar Coronas. Reluctant Nixon voters my parents were. They were happy though that the Kennedys were shot. Parents liked George Wallace. Alice Cooper. Deep Purple. Black Sabbath. ZZ Top. Whos Next.
Basketball practice Sunday nights. TV trays. Huntley and Brinkley.

As far as the 'Racist’ stuff goes, they were busing white kids to black schools as if somehow by a process of osmosis or some mystic force it was going to make black kids into better students. All it did was get my older brother beat up and me and a younger brother terrified we were going to be bused to the same school. Mom did the wise thing and moved rather than expose us to that racial hate from the black side.

Then in the late 70s we just stared into video games ruining our thumbs and eyesight.

Read it. Loved it. Thanks,
Good memories... right in my early - mid teen years.

I’m trying to resist talking about the music of the 70’s b/c I don’t want to disrespect the poster by hijacking the topic.
Still, in my head, I often take little trips back to that time, and listen to the Top 100 tunes of the year on New Years Eve. All that really seemed to matter then, who the Top 10 songs were.

I was the mother of 5 in the early 70s——the stories I could tell, and I’m sure there are PLENTY I never heard.

A most brilliant post. I grew up in the same age and understand completely. You touched long past memories that sadly the young today will never know or even understand if they did see.
Metallic man took a lot of time and effort into that post and he did well on his blog.

In small town Ohio circa 1972 my Apple Krate was king.

1970 dropped out of college, enlisted in the Marines, 1972 met my wife (also a Marine), got married, 1973 separated from Marines, restarted college. By 76 graduated, commissioned in the AF, went to Minot ND and by 77 had first son.
Pretty much the early 70s was a blur.

Interesting trip down memory lane, since I was 11 in ‘71. The only thing that jumped out at me that I really hadn’t seen mentioned in MANY years was a stupid song from the time by Lobo called “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo.” I had TOTALLY forgotten about that. Had to listen to it on youtube for instant OMG recall.

My dad got an important job in the Treasury Office. As a result I got a tour of the Oval office itself. Nixon had just come back from China so there were beautiful Porcelain Orchids on the Desk. Henry Kissinger walked across the hall , stopped... and gave us a dirty look like ‘What are these kids doing here?’.

I realize this post is mostly about “guy” stuff, but for the women here these are the things I remember from that era.
Liddle Kiddles, Flatsy Dolls and of course Barbies were all the thing. I remember my mom sewing culottes and skimmer tops for me for summer wear and they always included rick rack trim for some reason. She also made my Raggedy Ann doll matching outfits. What a mom!
She was also a culinary trailblazer making tacos and fondue and pseudo Chinese food. My friends thought we were so exotic. Miss you mom!

In 1971, at 17 I graduated HS and enlisted in the USAF 10 days later.
Can't believe my brothers and I had no clue about that Mad Scientist mag.
Loved the music chart!

That's a good Blog.
Man, I grew up in the 70’s.
The barber shop was just like what he described.
Typically I would go there get a hair cut then go over to the drug store to pick up my old neighbors Morphine and insulin for him.
I received 75 cents and a candy bar each time.
Yep, narcotics delivery was my first job.

Swimming at the YMCA, summer baseball league, all-night skating rinks, summer movie coupons for Pipi Longstocking, video arcade games, Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn, cowboys & indians, Hide n seek, floating down the river in the summer on inner tubes, sledding down a less-travelled hill in the winter, bicycles with banana seats and, most importantly in my sphere, easy listening. For me, the 70s was just being a kid. I wish I remembered more.
Others may bring up skateboards, leather, guitars, rock n roll & muscle cars, but that came later for me (early 80s).
