Wonder what the insurance company says about this intentionally stupid action by the car owner? And newer car, likely still paying for it.

I work in insurance on the claims side of things. Unfortunately, stupidity is covered!
That being said, it is often the case that incidents such as this are intentional. Water over the sill plate, especially salt or brackish water, will almost always total a car.
People that are upside down, behind, or simply don’t want the car anymore have figured this out!
