I don’t care if you have a southern accent. I don’t care if you use southern slang. If, however you absolutely mangle the language to the point that you are virtually indecipherable, then you should rightly receive some opprobrium.

I live and work in a rural area-the last time I heard ebonics/Black vernacular English was when I worked in the city-my Black neighbors speak English with the same Texas accent as those of us who are Latino and Anglo-I think that ebonics is just urban tribal crap...

” the way African-Americans speak leads to discrimination across the board “

As it should. Speak the king’s English. Learn to write cursive. Pull your damn pants up.

My wife is from Rhode Island and I’m from Georgia. When we first moved back to Georgia, I was trying to locate a business out in a rural area. I stopped and got out of the car to ask a young black boy for directions.

We talked a bit, then I got back in the car. My wife asked, “What language were you speaking?”

“English”, I replied.

“Both of you?”

“Yes.”

“I did not understand a word either of you spoke!”

(When traveling in foreign lands, it is best to learn the language of the local people!)

It’s not English. It’s not a language. It’s no more English than Swahili.

Accents and grammar matter.

Consider Germany and Switzerland - while you may converse at home in your dialect, any important business is conducted in proper High German (which I assume is the dialect of Brandenburg / Prussia).

That’s why the kids learn High German when young. An American national with PhD in Germanics from Zurich Technical University told me that when the Swiss youngsters enter primary school, the teacher speaks to them only in High German. They go home in tears, “Mommy, mommy, I can’t understand a thing Teacher is saying.” In about three weeks, they are conversant in High German.

I wonder.
Outside of the US, do any English speaking blacks use ‘ebonics?’
Sure didn’t sound like that in Barbadoes.

We have several Nigerians at my bride’s school.

They are not viewed as “African” by the native groups. Fights between the “true African Americans” and the “traitors” are very common, with the school staff being told to stay away.

Many of the second or third generation abandon their heritage.

Of course it’s a language. It’s a dialect of English that was learned from the plantation ovesteers, with special features due to the influence of African languages remembered or half remembered by the slaves. Since it’s similar to Southern dialects, speakers of Black English are more easily understood by white Southerners. That having been said, learning standard English is obviously helpful to economic advancement, so that is what schools should teach, just as schools teach immigrants standard English.

If you are white in England and speak with a cockney accent they think you are ill educated. It has nothing to do with race.

You’re right. I did a trip to Pittsburgh last year and ate at a restaurant called Primanti’s. First and only time I have ever been corrected about pronouncing a silent “t”. LOL

And why shouldn't they? You have only to listen to British television shows to hear that mastery of clear, intelligible English pronounciation and grammar by African-descended individuals is entirely possible and not linked to any physical difference from white people. Preservation of ebonics as a first languaage and not a familial dialect is a self-segregation born of resentment and lack of motivation.

Secondly, racialists in this country mistakenly believe that all white peoples' ancestors spoke English and that it is a natural inheritance from our genetic coding. This is not true. The percentage of English-descended people among present-day white Americans is in the single digits. The majority of white European-descended people now in America had ancestors whose native languages were a wide variety other than English: Dutch, Scots Gaelic, Welsh Gaelic, Irish, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Greek, Russian, Ukranian, Lithuanian, Serbian—to name only some. The great majority of all people who came to this land needed to learn English.

We also have many non-white individuals in this nation from India, the far East and from Amerindian tribes who have mastered English (and wouldn't dream of not doing so) in order to advance themselves as responsible adults. Most have extinguished ethnic accents by the first or second American-born generation.

Standard English is not “so-called standard ‘white’ English’. The latter is also a vernacular, albeit more prevalent.

This is just another communistic attempt to disunify and destroy the American people.

I worked hard to achieve 99%ile in Standard English - and I have often been mocked by whites for being so educated.
