Stealing From a Cashierless Store (Without You, or the Cameras, Knowing It)
The New York Times ^ | 13 September 2018 | Nellie Bowles

Posted on 09/16/2018 7:21:21 PM PDT by Theoria

A start-up uses visual tracking and behavioral data to operate a new San Francisco market, which lets shoppers walk out unimpeded. And sometimes mischarged.

One recent afternoon, the city’s newest grocery market was trying to figure out whether I would buy, steal or leave behind a bag of white Cheddar popcorn — and so was I.

On its side: 27 cameras along the ceiling and a wealth of behavioral data.

On my side: crippling indecision.

Last week, San Francisco got its first completely automated cashierless store, Standard Market. Shoppers who have downloaded the store’s app can go into the 1,900-square-foot space, grab items and simply leave. There is no check-in gate, and there is no checkout swipe. Ceiling cameras identify the shopper and the items, and determine when said items leave with said shopper. Or, at least, that’s the idea.

The start-up behind this operation is Standard Cognition, which has raised $11.2 million in venture capital and formed partnerships with four retail chains around the world. This first market is a prototype to showcase the technology and work on the bugs. The ambitious goal is to add the tech in 100 stores a day (each day!) by 2020.

We should never bring in illegals for any reason. If we truly need more workers they should be brought in legally.

The reason for our immigration laws is so we will know who is coming in, what their intentions are, ETC. That is the problem with illegals, we have no idea who they are, if they want to come here to work or commit crimes.

What you are suggesting is what has been attempted for years and failed. Why do you think at times we crack down and other times the border is all but open? The politicians and businesses that hire illegals have been trying to do that behind our back.

I have seen many autistic and Down’s at Safeway, bagging. They are conscientious and courteous. It is a job they can do with pride.

This could work very successfully in a populace that has common values based on Christian morals. Not so much in atheist-dominant areas, tho. But the day isn’t far off when most low-level labor will be done by robot, just like robots clean and dry our clothes and dishes and answer our phones. One man to control 6 lawnmowing robots, one maid to control a dozen vacuuming, dusting and toilet cleaning robots (still need a human to make the bed, tho, for a while).

The unions will hate it - government workers will be their only clients.

“Cashiers will be as obsolete as elevator operators.”

I was in a large fancy office building in Downtown Chicago last week. The public passenger elevators are state of the art. Quick, gentle, and efficient.

Then I met with the Building Engineer to confirm some infrastructure stuff in the basement. We used the non public elevators the building staff uses. When the doors opened I almost fell over.

Yep. Elevator Operator in uniform, just like back in the day.

Guess what...it’s a Union job.

Customers: naive, willing lab rats.

^ This + 1 Standard Cognition, the only thing they aren’t getting from you is your DNA. They are inside your phone, have facial recognition on you, your mannerisms, buying habits, and who knows what else. Not a place I would set foot in.

In all of my years, I have simply never been able to master the art of cooking an egg the way I like to eat them. I certainly am as well inept at flipping a burger to my own satisfaction.

I have driven many trucks many miles, and that is mostly easy, except for when it isn’t. I broke down a few times and trust me, no computer is going to fix a bunch of blowouts, or a broken linkage as I have had to do, with a wire hanger.

Massive potholes, powerful storms, whiteouts, accidents ahead, or just aggressively bad drivers all around me.

Truck driving is not mindless, by any means.

All they can make is trouble.

And vote. The democrat party depends on precisely this demographic.

10-20 yoofs in hoodies could steal everything worthwhile in three minutes. One yoof has the app to open the front door and the rest rush in behind him.

Agreed. I won’t ever go to them. My wife asked why and I told her, “I don’t work here. If they want me to help out, discount my purchase.”

They’ve allegedly been doing the behavioral study thing for decades with camera recording who selects which razor.

Is there anything in the contract to keep stores from selling/sharing this app data with commercial companies?

Everyone thinks they can facebook and google and amazon your data.

Doesn’t Home Depot have a corporate policy to not stop shoplifters /theives? I know I’ve seen articles about one of the brick and mortars .

And if some customers don’t have to pay, that cost will just be passed along to the rest of the consumers there. Sort of like taxes

The onslaught of tech into the economy of lower skilled employees is something to behold.

Thank you, minimum wage supporters. Without the minimum wage getting jacked so cavalierly, the disruption to the economy and the pain to low-skilled workers would have been less acute.
